Oral health is one of the essential aspects of health and hygiene that you should care about. According to the World Health Organization, oral infections are among the most common diseases that are non-communicable. They can cause severe pain and discomfort. In the worst cases, oral infections can lead to death.

Oral diseases arise as a result of a personal lifestyle. What you eat and how you take care of your teeth and mouth determine their health status. In most cases, oral health issues are indicators of poor eating habits. Eating disorders can lead to infections.

This article teaches you some of the ways that your oral health is trying to inform you that your diet is out of order. When you notice any signs of oral infections, you should see a dentist immediately. However, it is necessary to watch what you eat to avoid worsening your case.

Here are some of the ways your oral health can result in an eating disorder.

1. Teeth Decay

Without counting the five percent of adults who have no teeth, 92% of adults above 20 years have had dental cavities on their permanent teeth. The research shows that people in the upper class represent a higher number of total infections. However, people from low-income families have a higher number of untreated caries.

Teeth decay is a dental infection that results from the bacterial activity of sugar. When you consume added sugars in excess, the bacteria in your mouth decomposes it within the first 20 minutes. The decomposition turns the sugar into acidic substances that react against your teeth enamel.

Consuming sugar in itself is not wrong because your body needs it for immediate energy. Kids, however, should have less amounts of added sugar. Its consumption can be a problem with your child’s teeth because they are not fully developed. After a dental treatment, your child needs a kids crown to fill the gap for esthetic and health enhancement.

he most common cause of loss of teeth in all age groups is periodontal disease. Although the infection is treatable, you need to prevent it before it sets. Periodontitis can also lead to heart diseases and stroke. In patients with diabetes, the condition can worsen as a result of periodontal infection.

The main cause of gum infections that lead to tooth loss is poor dental practices. However, diet can prevent the infection or give way to the worsening of the condition. Essentially, when the infection sets in, you are missing some nutrients that are necessary to prevent the disease.

To prevent periodontal disease, eat meals rich in zinc, antioxidants, and folate. These nutrients play various roles in the body. In dental care, they help in maintaining the gum tissues and improving immunity. Categorically, a deficit in folate - also known as vitamin B - can lead to periodontal infection. You can add it to your diet from food or as a supplement.

3. Degenerative Arthritis In The Temporomandibular Joint

The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw to the skull. This joint is sensitive and it needs more care to enhance your oral health as well as your general well-being. Degenerative arthritis is a common disease that affects this joint. It causes discomfort and pain in your jaw and makes chewing, yawning, and any activity that involves movements of the joint difficult.

An infected temporomandibular joint may also cause headaches and ear pain. The complication can also cause inflammation of tissues and ligaments in and around the joint. With this pain, you cannot eat normally, and your general health will deteriorate quickly.

Whatever the cause, eating disorders lead to faster development of the problem. To help improve your situation, you need to avoid eating hard foods and those that require too much chewing. This includes bubble gum, nuts, apples, and carrots. Instead, extract the juice from fruits you want to eat. Boiling foods like carrots softens them and makes it easier to chew.

4. Weak And Brittle Teeth

Teeth need to be strong enough to bite into food and chew adequately when eating. You should not have problems chewing your food. However, when you have weak teeth, you will find it difficult to bite hard food items like sugar cane or apples. Brittle teeth can break quite easily while eating.

This is common when teeth lack calcium and nutrients necessary for building strong enamel. A common cause is if you vomit after eating. The acids from the stomach wash off the calcium from the teeth and make them weak. However, it can also be an indication that you are including a lot of acidic substances in your food. You need to monitor your diet and eat substances that are beneficial to your body and gentle on your stomach.

Summing Up

Caring for your teeth is one of the ways to ensure that you live a healthy lifestyle. It begins with regular dental care practices like brushing and mouth washing. Monitoring your foods and eating habits will also help to save your teeth, gums, and jaw from damage. Save your teeth to save your health.
