Middle Age Tooth Loss - Why? What Can You Do?

With age often comes tooth loss, but sometimes it begins earlier then is expected and teeth can become loose and fall out in middle age. The best way to avoid this is with proper dental care, regular dental visits, and avoiding smoking and other habits that damage teeth.

If the problem has already started it is important to have a discussion with your dentist on how to move forward and protect your teeth.

Dry Mouth And Middle Age Tooth Loss

The aging process - as well as some medications - can lead to dry mouth. This can increase the rate of infections and cavities, so should be treated with not only increased water consumption but decreasing dehydrating beverages such as caffeine and alcohol. Chewing sugarless gum can also be beneficial for fighting dry mouth.

Smoking And Middle Age Tooth Loss

It is important to not only avoid beverages and foods that increase sugar and dry the mouth, but also to avoid smoking. Over the years smoking will weaken the enamel and dentin and can weaken the teeth causing them to become loose early. It also increases the occurrences of cancers that can affect the health of the mouth and teeth and require intensive treatment.

Brushing, Flossing And Middle Age Tooth Loss

Brushing and flossing twice a day will keep down the plaque build-up and the food debris that gathers between the teeth and gums. This build-up can affect the seal of the gums around the teeth and can lead to loose teeth over time, as well as contributing to periodontal disease, which also leads to increased cavities and tooth loss.

This is important at any age, but must be maintained throughout life to keep the benefits as long as possible.

While it is important to brush and floss twice a day, it can be beneficial to brush after each meal, or to rinse the mouth with water at a minimum, to keep the teeth free of build-up and food particles. In some cases surgeries can be used to correct receding gums or puffy gums that begin to cover the teeth. This will help to maintain healthy teeth.

Dental care at all ages is very similar: brushing and flossing to keep the food particles and plaque build-up down, and regular dental appointments for cleaning and to catch any concerns early.

Avoid habits like chewing non-food items, such as pens and pencils, as they will wear the teeth down sooner. Also, keep away from smoking and foods and beverages that add extra sugar to the teeth or caffeine that can weaken the enamel.
