How To Take Care Of Your Teeth After You Have A Crown Put On

If you have a damaged tooth that may be prone to cracking or breaking, having a dental crown installed is often the best option. Constructed of porcelain, gold, and ceramic, a crown can provide virtually complete coverage for a damaged tooth while looking extremely natural.

While made to last many years, it is still important you take proper care of your teeth after having a crown installed. To ensure you do, here are some key tips to keep in mind.

Avoid Sticky Foods after a crown installation

Once your crown is installed, avoid sticky foods such as jelly, caramel, and chewing gum. Since the crown was attached to your tooth with a thin layer of oral cement, eating these types of foods could possibly loosen the crown, making another trip to the dentist a necessity.

Use a Soft-Bristle Toothbrush after a crown installation

Since brushing your teeth regularly will be important in keeping your crown and the rest of your teeth in excellent condition, use a soft-bristle toothbrush when brushing your teeth. By doing so, you can avoid brushing too hard and possibly loosening the crown, and also prevent damaging the area of your gums near the crown.

Use a Protective Splint or Mouth Guard after a crown installation

Should you have a tendency to clench or grind your teeth, speak to your family dentist about the benefits of using a protective splint or mouth guard to protect your crown. Usually worn only at night, these devices not only keep you from biting down too hard on your crown, but also protect your other teeth as well from being damaged.

Floss Daily after a crown installation

Along with brushing your teeth at least twice daily after you receive your new crown, it is also just as important that you floss your teeth at least once per day. When doing so, pay particular attention to the margins around your crown.

Since these areas are prone to collecting food particles, failing to floss daily can allow for a buildup of bacteria and plaque around the crown's margins. When this happens, a cavity could form underneath the crown, causing it to fall off.

Since you now have a smile that looks great following the installation of your new crown, make sure you take the time each day to do what's needed in practicing good oral hygiene. By doing so, you'll not only have a crown that will last for decades, but also put a smile on the face of your dentist as well.
