How To Select The Right Mouthwash For Your Best Oral Care

Dentists often recommend the use of mouthwash for improved oral care. However, there are quite a number of them, and depending on the state of your current dental situation, you may require different needs than someone else, even your own spouse.

Mouthwashes are either cosmetic or therapeutic. Cosmetic mouthwashes are ideal for warding off bad breath on a temporary basis and leave you with a fresh, minty taste. Therapeutic mouthwashes have more specific ingredients in them to help improve your oral hygiene. You’ll find them for gum health, plaque buildup, and dry mouth. Most of them are available in any store or online, though for severe dental problems, your dentist may write you a prescription for one you’ll have to get from your pharmacy.

Choosing the right mouthwash means you need to think about what oral health problems you may have and find one that can help.

Concerns To Address With Mouthwash

Some people worry about having bad breath but otherwise have good oral health. If you’re one of them, you may want to keep a bottle of cosmetic mouthwash in your desk at work so you won’t bowl over your coworkers in afternoon meetings after eating curry or garlic.

If you have dry mouth from medications, a mouthwash designed for this can be beneficial. This will also keep worse dental drama from occurring due to lack of saliva. For plaque or gum troubles, you will want a mouthwash that has bacteria-fighting ingredients.

It’s important to look for an ADA Seal of Acceptance on the mouthwash you choose. You might be surprised that some well-known brands don’t have it, but if the ADA approves it, it is always a good choice.

Ingredients That Provide The Best Benefits To Oral Health

If you have concerns other than bad breath after lunch, you should look for specific ingredients in your mouthwash. If you have gingivitis and want to keep it from going into full-blown gum disease, choose a mouthwash with chlorhexidine. It also reduces plaque and helps break the damaging cycle in your mouth. For bacteria control and fresh breath, try mouthwash that has cetylpyridinium chloride.

Want help with whiter and brighter teeth? You’ll see more dazzle in every smile with carbamide peroxide. You can also keep things more natural with compounds from essential oils. Eucalyptus, thymol, and menthol all are antifungal and antibacterial.

When you supplement brushing with the right mouthwash for you, you will notice a healthier mouth. And chances are, your dentist will notice at your next checkup too!
