How To Ensure Your Teeth Whitening Method Is Safe

Dingy and stained teeth are very common. The reason is either the plaque buildup on the surface or some dental diseases. But just a simple Google query – how to get rid of teeth stains – and you will find dozens of products and home remedies that you will be tempted to try out. Although over-the-counter teeth whitening products and home remedies can work wonders in making your teeth a shade lighter, they can have certain downsides.

To help you avoid serious complications bleaching agents can cause in the long run, below are a few things that you must ensure when you go for a teeth whitening treatment at home.

Choose Products With ADA Seal Of Approval

Before using any teeth whitening product, you must check if it has been identified as safe and effective through independent tests. Hence, look for the ADA seal of approval on the packaging when you go to buy them.

Check The Percentage Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Carbamide Peroxide

According to the American Dental Association, only the products that have less than 10 percent of hydrogen peroxide and 35 percent of carbamide peroxide should be used for teeth whitening. If the percentage of these chemicals is higher, teeth whitening products can have reversed effects including sensitivity, burning sensations, tissue damage, etc. Hence, if you are using natural bleaching agents such as charcoal and strawberry, then ensure they do not have a higher percentage of these chemicals.

Use Teeth Whitening Products In Moderation

It is a common myth that the more you use teeth whitening and bleaching products, the whiter your teeth will be. Excessive use of bleaching chemicals can wear down the enamel of your teeth and cause sensitivity. And in the long run, your teeth will be yellower. The same goes for natural bleaching agents since they gradually destroy the protective layers on the teeth and cause the dentin to stain.

Use A Customized Dental Tray

Many people make the mistake of using mouthguards to apply whitening gel on teeth. However, such products that are not designed for your teeth and mouth can negatively affect your gums and throat. Hence, you must consult your dentist and get a customized dental tray designed. You can also go for over-the-counter sticky strips that are designed to whiten the teeth and easily available. But make sure you use it in moderation since excess hydrogen peroxide can damage proteins in the dentin layer of teeth.

Continue Your Dental Routine Even After Teeth Whitening Or Bleaching

It is often assumed that teeth whitening is the same as cleaning. But the truth is that teeth cleaning removes plaque and tartar accumulated on the surface of your teeth, whereas teeth whitening is removing teeth stains for cosmetic purposes. Hence, if you are using products for teeth whitening, you must not quit taking care of your teeth. Brushing and flossing your teeth is of utmost importance even after the treatment.

Consult Your Dentist

Bleaching agents are not always effective. They work best only on stains or yellowness caused due to aging, colored foods, and drinks. Hence, if you see black and brown stains on your teeth, there might be a possibility of serious teeth or gum problems. Hence, you must check with your dentist before you start a teeth whitening treatment. This way you can also ask for recommendations of bleaching products and make sure you’re not making a mistake.

Final Word

Our teeth are sensitive and they require regular care. So, make sure you have a proper dental routine in place to maintain oral hygiene. You should also visit your dentist every six months and secure your beautiful smile.
