Foods That Improve Your Dental Health

Just as there are foods that can increase the risk of cavities, residue on the teeth, and plaque buildup, there are some foods that improve dental health. These foods provide the nutrients that teeth need to maintain strong enamel, protect teeth and gums from infection, and help prevent germ growth that causes cavities.

Diet and food choices

In addition to good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing twice daily and maintaining regular dental visits, diet and food choices can help improve dental health. Dairy such as cheese, yogurt, and milk are all healthy choices for dental health. These foods will counteract acid from other foods and neutralize the acidity within the mouth.

Removing the effects of acid on the enamel allow it to remain intact; the calcium found in these foods promote strong enamel and healthy teeth.

Calcium

Calcium can help strengthen teeth and enamel, but for the body to absorb and use it efficiently, vitamin D is also required. Fish is a strong source of this vitamin and eating fish regularly can help improve the effects of calcium intake, as well as absorbing vitamin D from the sun’s rays.

Water

Drinking plenty of water is an easy way to improve your oral health. If the body is not consuming enough water the body can become dehydrated, which reduces the formation of saliva and increases risk of cavities.

Water also helps rinse food from the mouth and keep the teeth free of debris, while rinsing away any sugary drinks or foods so they are unable to remain in contact with the teeth. This reduced contact with sugar, and improved levels of saliva, will protect the teeth from extra germs and infections.

By lowering the risk of gum infection and disease, the breath will remain better, teeth are less likely to form cavities, and both root canals and tooth extractions can be avoided.

Tea

Tea, either black tea or green tea, is beneficial for dental health. There are polyphenols present in tea of all types, and these specific nutrients fight the germs that cause plaque. By reducing the plaque causing germs there is a reduction in cavities and gum disease, and dental health is greatly improved.

Onions also have this effect on germs and can be consumed raw in meals or cooked. Even as a seasoning, onions will destroy some of the cavity-causing germs.

Vegetables

Vegetables that are high in water content and fiber can be beneficial for teeth and oral health. The increased time it takes to chew celery will increase the saliva within the mouth, which helps keep teeth clean, and the fiber and consistency of the celery will rub against the teeth removing buildup.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate also has ingredients and nutrients that can help to strengthen the enamel on the teeth. While large amounts of chocolate can have the opposite effect due to the high sugar content that is found in many types of chocolate, a few pieces of dark chocolate can be beneficial for tooth health.
