Even though most people understand that poor dental hygiene can lead to a loss of teeth that can't grow back, there are still a lot of people who fail to practice good dental hygiene habits. This is unfortunate, as a healthy mouth can help give you confidence, make it easier to eat, and help prevent certain diseases. To understand which bad habits to avoid, here are four things people often fail to do to protect their dental health.
Brushing your teeth is one of the most important ways to protect your teeth in-between dentist visits. Just brushing your teeth any way you please, however, can actually lead to further dental decay. The key is to brush softly, as this helps protect the enamel on your teeth. While brushing, it's important to focus on letting the bristles do the work as you try to apply as little pressure as possible.
Another important oral hygiene habit is flossing. As with brushing, though, improper flossing can cause more damage than it prevents. While some pressure may be required to fit the floss through crowded teeth, you want to try and stop this pressure once the floss is resting on your gums. Simply use a slight downward motion to allow the floss to clean your teeth and gums, then move onto the next space. Flossing too hard can push your gums down, leaving your gums and teeth vulnerable to decay.
Get Regular Teeth Cleanings
Though it only needs to be done every six months, there are still plenty of people who fail to have regular teeth cleanings. The cleanings you receive from a dentist, however, are crucial to maintaining long-term oral health. Dentists use specialized tools and a skilled hand to remove plaque that has accumulated at your gum line. Once plaque has formed, it is impossible to remove through brushing, flossing, or an oral rinse. Keep your appointments and you'll enjoy a lifetime of good oral health.
Let Teeth Remineralize
Just as brushing with too much pressure can cause problems, brushing too soon after eating can cause problems as well. When you eat, the sugars in the food soften the enamel on your teeth. If you brush too soon after eating, therefore, the brushing action can actually remove some of the enamel, leaving your teeth vulnerable to cavities. To properly protect your teeth, then, it's important that you wait at least 30 minutes after eating anything to give those pearly whites a good cleaning.
Since most of your teeth are hard to see, another common problem that can happen is that people simply fail to pay attention to their oral health. While a problem may be painful at first, if it's ignored long enough, you may be able to get used to the pain. Therefore, do your best to keep close tabs on your oral health so you can have any problems addressed as soon as you notice them.
