In-office dental cleanings should be a regular part of any dental care routine. During a cleaning, a dental hygienist can clean each tooth thoroughly using specialized instruments that remove more of the plaque buildup and polish the enamel surface to make each tooth look its best.

Most patients are advised to come in for these cleanings once every six months, but some patients may require more cleanings and checkups if they have special dental concerns.

Cavity Checks

When teeth are cleaned in a dentist’s office, a dental professional can check the teeth for any signs of cavities. Patients who aren’t experiencing pain while eating or any unusual sensitivity to hot or cold foods or beverages may still have cavities in their teeth.

If cavities are detected, the decaying sections of teeth can be drilled out and filled with fillings to stop the cavities from reaching the deeper levels of teeth and causing more serious problems.

Gum Disease Prevention

One of the key goals of preventative dental care is to keep gum disease from developing inside a patient’s mouth. Teeth cleanings are also good for the gums and can remove the bacteria and food particles that are known to contribute to the development of gum disease. If a patient is diagnosed with gum disease, treatments can be administered to reverse the condition and stop the gums from receding and developing infections.

Bad Breath Treatment

In-office dental cleanings can often do a better job of preventing bad breath than just brushing and flossing at home alone. The hygienist can perform a deep cleaning to remove more of the germs and bacteria that contribute to bad breath.

Any decaying teeth or gum problems that are causing bad breath can also be diagnosed properly during the cleaning appointment so that the appropriate treatment can be rendered to stop the resulting odors that are coming from the mouth.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer doesn’t just affect tobacco users and can occur in people of different ages. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is linked to oral cancer and can sometimes cause cancerous lesions to form in people’s mouths. When regular teeth cleanings are performed, the dentist can check for any unusual spots or sores that are cancerous or may eventually become malignant.

Regular dental cleanings can do more than just make teeth cleaner and prettier. When these cleanings are performed on a consistent basis, dental professionals are given better opportunities to look for problems that should be treated immediately to keep the insides of patients’ mouths healthy.
