4 Possible Causes Of Chronic Jaw Pain

While you may take your jaw for granted, that will all change once you develop chronic jaw pain. Before you know it, everything from eating to talking suddenly becomes more excruciating than you ever imagined. Of course, your first thought will be to wonder what is causing the pain and how can it be treated. If you find yourself suffering from chronic jaw pain, here are four possible causes.

TMJ Disorder a cause of chronic jaw pain

If you have a temporomandibular joint disorder, you are experiencing what doctors usually refer to as TMJ. When this happens, it means the joint that connects your skull and jaw has become misaligned or damaged in some way.

Often, pain may occur on just one side, but it can be evident on both sides of your jaw as well. If you have difficulty opening or closing your mouth, hear clicking or popping while chewing food, or have a very tender jaw, see a dentist who specializes in TMJ disorders as soon as possible.

Misaligned Teeth a cause of chronic jaw pain

If you have teeth that are severely misaligned, you may also experience chronic jaw pain. In these situations, the constant pressure teeth are applying to one another as well as your gums will lead to chronic pain. If this is an issue, consult with a dentist who practices orthodontics to learn about available treatment options.

Sinus Problems a cause of chronic jaw pain

Should you be an allergy sufferer or be experiencing a bad head cold, chronic jaw pain may be yet another obstacle you face on a regular basis. In these situations, the sinus cavities known as the maxillary sinuses behind your cheeks become inflamed, resulting in chronic pain.

Like the previous two conditions mentioned above, pain can occur on one or both sides of your jaw. While standard OTC allergy medications can help, you should see a doctor if the pain worsens.

Osteomyelitis a cause of chronic jaw pain

Though not as common as the others, osteomyelitis is a condition where your jaw bone becomes infected. Often occurring after an injury to your mouth or following surgery, it can be successfully treated with antibiotics when it first begins. If you experience a fever, tenderness or swelling in your jaw, or pain that continues to get more unbearable, see a doctor immediately.

Since most causes of chronic jaw pain can be easily treated, there is no need for you to endure never-ending pain. Instead, consult with your dentist and begin a treatment regimen that will bring you much-needed relief.
