Taking care of your teeth is a must if you always want to have a pearly white smile. There are many things you’ll need to do regularly such as brushing and having your bi-annual cleanings. However, when it comes to flossing, it can be easy to forget. Here are four big reasons why you should always ensure you fit flossing into your daily oral health routine.

Plaque Accumulation

We all know that plaque can be harmful to our teeth if left unattended for lengthy periods of time. While you may brush and use mouthwash regularly, plaque can still accumulate between the crevices in your teeth. This plaque is formulated as a result of sticky bacteria and food particles in the mouth. Other than just being unsightly and irritating, plaque buildup can result in the loss of your protective tooth enamel. This can lead to bigger issues like cavities.

Bad Breath

While you may not think of general dentistry when it comes to having bad breath, your oral health plays a big role in your scent. When your mouth is properly taken care of, you don’t have to worry about bad breath. However, if you leave out flossing as part of your daily oral health routine, bad breath can be your new best friend. This is simply due to the plaque buildup in the mouth that can create rancid smells and even rotting teeth.

Tooth Shifting

Yes, that’s right. If you really throw the practice of flossing out the window, harmful plaque buildup will occur. When this happens, it will start to get hard over time. Since plaque builds up in between the teeth, it will eventually cause the teeth to start shifting. This is so that there is more room for the unremoved plaque to continue to build up. If you want to keep your smile straight, then flossing regularly is a must.

Gum Inflammation

When plaque and food particles buildup on the gums from a lack of flossing, it can spur bacterial infections like gingivitis. This results in painful gum inflammation. If left untreated, it can lead to many more health issues throughout the body like heart disease. It can always wear away at the gum, which may necessitate a gum graft.

Flossing your teeth is an important oral health practice that should be done at least twice per day. If left out completely, it can cause several issues in your mouth from the plaque buildup. Be sure to talk to your dentist if you are worried about any of these problems occurring to you.
