4 Consequences You Might Face If You Don't Go To The Dentist Often

It would be best if you visited your dentist at least every six months, but many people think that's far too often and unnecessary. To make matters worse, many people don't go to the dentist at all because they assume that regular brushing is enough to keep their teeth and gums in good health and a visit to the dentist is too costly or a waste of time.

But how bad can things get if you don't go to the dentist regularly? The consequences of ignoring or putting off regular dentist visits can be catastrophic. Read on to find out how.

Tooth Loss and Tooth Decay

Regular brushing is not enough if you want your smile and teeth and gums to remain healthy until you're old and gray. The fact is that many people don't brush their teeth often enough to prevent plaque and tartar build-up. It's estimated that roughly 30 percent of Americans aren't brushing enough. Experts recommend brushing twice a day for approximately two minutes.

Even if you're brushing your teeth twice a day for the correct amount of time, you can still suffer from tooth decay because brushing alone doesn't reach those hard-to-reach areas between and behind your teeth. Professional cleaning by a dentist is the most effective way to remove plaque and tartar trapped between teeth and in other areas you can't reach with regular brushing.

Foul Smelling Breath

Plaque and tartar accumulation on your teeth can lead to bad breath. When you skip regular visits to a dentist, plaque can accumulate in hidden areas and lead to bacteria growth, abscesses, and gum disease, leading to foul-smelling breath. Good preventative dental care should include routine cleaning and check-ups by a dentist.

Tooth Discoloration

Everyone wants a bright and attractive smile. The longer you put off going to the dentist, the more dingy and yellow your teeth will become over time. Your dentist can help remove stains and discoloration from your teeth and advise you on the best diet and oral care products to help maintain a beautiful, white smile.

Lower Confidence

The condition and health of your teeth and gums have a direct effect on your self-confidence. People with healthy-looking teeth feel more confident and smile more often, which makes them feel happier. Even if your teeth appear healthy today, your teeth and smile will suffer in the long run if you continue to put off going to the dentist. When it comes to your teeth and gums, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Your teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but that will only happen with proper oral care. Regular visits to a dentist are not something you should put off or ignore if you want your smile to be bright and your teeth and gums to be healthy.
