While it’s been around for centuries, aquaponics is now becoming front and center in our sustainable world. As we see that what we do has a major impact on the planet, many are turning to more sustainable and efficient methods for our health and for our environment too.

There are so many benefits to aquaponic gardening that many are doing it in their own backyards. Here’s why you should think about doing it too!

Save Water with aquaponic gardening

Water scarcity is already happening around the world. Just a year ago, Cape Town was on the verge of running out. This is why aquaponics is a smart solution. It requires much less water thanks to the fish and plant system, recirculating it through for maximum efficiency.

Grow Just About Anywhere with aquaponic gardening

With aquaponics, growing plants is possible pretty much anywhere. You can grow food in a greenhouse, warehouse, or outdoors even in places without proper soil.

Use Natural Fertilization Methods with aquaponic gardening

When you use aquaponics, the plants get nutrients from the water source which contains byproducts from the fish. Aquaponics basically copies a natural ecosystem, producing many nutrients that your plants need all without the use of chemicals.

So you’re growing quality food that you can feel good about eating. This cuts down on the overall effect of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides in our environment.

Embraces The Concept Of Zero Waste with aquaponic gardening

Because this process of raising fish and growing plants together is so sustainable and natural, there isn’t any waste to contend with. Solids from the fish system can simply be used in a compost pile or added to your trees and plants. Unharvested plants can be composted or used to feed animals. There’s very little water to discharge, just like in nature. There’s no waste in nature and with aquaponics, that’s what’s so appealing.

You Won’t Be Eating Food That Came From Miles Away with aquaponic gardening

Going to the store, you waste gas yourself, but when you choose your foods from there, do you know how far those foods traveled to get there? That’s what they call food miles. These food miles add to pollution and create a larger carbon footprint. Many foods you buy have come a long way. If you grow your own via aquaponics, you’ll be putting an end to all that pollution, plus you’ll get fresher, tastier food for your efforts.

Plus, it’s better for your financials too. It takes an initial investment to set up aquaponics but once you do, it pays for itself. You won’t have to waste so much energy or water, plus you’ll always have fresh fish and tasty produce to eat. Sometimes, to move forward, we’ve got to go back to our roots and that’s what aquaponics does by putting us back in touch with nature.
