Vitamin C Could Save You From A Heart Attack Or Stroke, Says Study

Almost 30 percent of adults in the US suffer from high blood pressure, or fully diagnosed hypertension. Odds are you know someone who has high blood pressure, or perhaps even you suffer from it yourself. Even slight increases in blood pressure can greatly raise the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Cardiovascular disease risk increases, along with higher chances of fatal events like heart attacks or stroke. New research from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine points to a much simpler solution in lowering blood pressure than previously known, and you might be doing it already just not enough. 

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, research suggests a modest blood pressure lowering effect with vitamin C supplementation, and that taking more than the daily average recommendation could be enough to reduce risk of heart attack or stroke. This study was a meta-analysis of 29 previous clinical trials, and its findings are impressive enough to warrant further research.

Because of this there has been a huge miscommunication about proper levels of supplements to take, and this new research indicates that going beyond what current recommendations are could save lives.

Lead study author Dr. Peter Miller stated that Although our review found only a moderate impact on blood pressure, if the entire US population lowered blood pressure by 3 milliliters of mercury, there would be a lot fewer strokes.

Its believed that vitamin Cs diuretic effects help remove more sodium and fluids from the body, and by doing so the blood vessels walls are allowed to relax thus lowering blood pressure.
