In today’s competitive business landscape, it’s important to do all you can to attract and retain quality employees. While unique perks are an important part of this package, another important aspect is the thoughtful design of the space where these employees will be working. Among other elements, quality lighting is one of the key components that can make or break an office environment. To ensure you achieve a desirable environment, then, here are a few tips to help you use better office lighting in order to decrease eye strain.

Go Where They Go

The problem with generalized office lighting is just that - it’s generalized, meaning that no single employee receives the quality lighting they need to help decrease eye strain. That’s why it’s important to carefully plan your office environment to ensure that proper lighting accompanies each work space, allowing the right amount of light to shine for each employee. Properly wired, this zone-specific lighting also allows you to shut off lights in areas that are not in use, resulting in significant energy savings.

As Bright As Day

Depending on the line of business you’re involved in, the simple solution to decreased employee eye strain may be more lighting. In many cases, however, extra lighting may be limited due to concerns about increased energy costs or strains on the building’s electrical system. Fortunately, with energy-efficient fixtures such as an 8ft LED tube, you can add greatly increased lighting and still minimize your energy usage.

Color It Right

If you really want to go the extra mile to create a great office environment, you can utilize different colors or “temperatures” of lighting to ensure your employees’ eyes are never exposed to undue strain. For example, if you have employees that work in the evening, a more soft white light with a lower color temperature can help to decrease eye strain and improve your employees’ mental health. Employees working in the morning, however, would benefit more from a daylight-colored light with a higher color temperature. If you install fixtures that can change colors throughout the day, you’ll have a thoughtfully lit office that requires zero effort on your part.

Matched To Needs

In many cases, the need for lighting goes beyond simply “on” or “off.” In these situations, dimmable lighting fixtures are absolutely the way to go. By limiting the amount of light that shines in a specific space, you can help your employees decrease the amount of eye strain they experience. This is especially helpful for employees working in windowless spaces, allowing them to customize their level of light to meet their needs throughout the day.

Long-Term Gain

Though quality lighting may require a larger up-front investment, you’ll more than reap the benefits, over time. Whether it’s decreased energy usage resulting from energy-efficient fixtures or it’s less employee sick time resulting from decreased eye strain, you’ll be glad you went the extra mile when it came to the lighting in your office space. With the right design and the right fixtures, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
