Chronic pain can have a huge impact on your quality of life and make it nearly impossible to carry out everyday tasks. If you have been struggling with chronic pain, then you might want to look at some unique pain management strategies that don't require prescription medications.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
While cognitive behavioral therapy won’t necessarily minimize an individual’s pain, it can alter how much that discomfort affects their mental health. The primary goal of CBT is to change how an individual perceives pain while reducing general anxiety and depression.
This type of therapy is typically carried out by a certified counselor or psychologist who will guide the patient through various exercises during their appointments, and those sessions are usually scheduled at least once every few days.
Some cases of chronic pain can even be psychosomatic, so it’s possible that this type of treatment could reduce it quite a bit for some people.
Virtual reality technology is more advanced than ever, and organizations like AppliedVR are now using that type of technology to treat chronic pain. Much like cognitive behavioral therapy, the goal of VR therapy is to alter how you perceive and manage your pain on an emotional level.
The VR device can be used to activate key areas of the brain that process pain to create a physiological response.
Deep Breathing Sessions
Deep breathing is essentially a form of meditation that focuses on breathing patterns to alter the individual’s mental state as well as their physical pain. During those exercises, the individual will inhale deep into their lungs so that they can relax their muscles while increasing the amount of usable oxygen that is in their bloodstream.
As a bonus, this type of exercise can easily be carried out from the comfort of your own home whenever you are struggling with pain.
Cupping has been around for thousands of years, and it is used to treat a wide array of health complications. While more research needs to be done on this practice, some medical professionals believe that it is an ideal option for repairing soft tissue and reducing discomfort.
When the cup is placed over the skin, it will trigger the body’s healing response by breaking apart small capillaries and increasing blood flow to the area.
Even though these treatments can be effective in some situations, you should always consult with your doctor before trying any new pain management techniques. If you want a long-term solution to your chronic pain, then your medical team might need to diagnose and address other underlying health conditions.
