Understanding The Importance Of Regular Eye Exams

Even if you don’t wear contacts or glasses, did you know it’s still vital for you to visit the eye doctor regularly? You’d be surprised how easily vision problems can actually go unnoticed.

Also, there are countless eye diseases that may need serious intervention if not caught early. Read on to find out exactly why you should get your eyes checked every year, no matter who you are.

Eye Diseases Which Require Early Intervention

Without visiting an eye doctor at least once every two years (as an adult), you may not be able to catch these serious eye diseases early on. Catching them early means being able to correct them without much trouble.

• Cataracts can cause blurred vision and require surgery to treat. A cataract happens when your eyes’ lenses become clouded.
• Diabetic retinopathy, which, as the name suggests, is particularly ominous for those living with diabetes, occurs when the blood vessels in the back of your eye become damaged. This is the number-one cause of blindness in American adults.
• Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the nerves in the back of your eyes.
• Age-related macular degeneration occurs when the light-sensitive tissues in your eyes begin to degrade.

Some Telltale Signs That You Should See Your Eye Doctor Immediately

There are several signs that indicate need for an immediate eye exam.

For example, if your vision begins to blur, if you experience eye pain or double vision, or if your eyes appear red or drained for an extended period of time, please make an appointment with your eye doctor as soon as possible.

In addition, if you start seeing circles or halos around lights, if you see floaters - or specks in your field of vision which move when your eyes move - or if you see flashes of light, you need to have your eyes examined immediately.

Having decreased vision or experiencing blindness can drastically reduce your quality of life. Therefore, it’s imperative that you ensure that your eyes are functioning properly and without disease, and that you wear contact lenses or glasses if your eye doctor recommends them - especially if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.  

Make an appointment with your eye care center immediately, and keep your eyes in good, lifelong health.
