If you are struggling with an illness or have a chronic condition that requires medication, it is important for you to take your medication as regularly as possible. Not only can having a schedule help individuals develop routine and regularity in their daily life but there are also medical benefits to taking your medication regularly.
Why Create a Schedule for Medication
It is important to create and stick to a schedule when taking medication to ensure that the medication is effective, especially for prescription medications that need to be taken over long-term.
Some medications also have side effects if they are taken inconsistently, which can lead to reduced efficiency and increased discomfort. If you take medication on a regular schedule, it will help your body get used to the medication and allow it to work better.
If you take multiple medications, creating a schedule for taking medication also helps you remember to take your medication. With how busy a day can be, it can be easy to forget to take medicine, but setting up a schedule with regular alarms and reminders can help you stay on top of your health obligations.
Regularly Taking Your Medications
If you have prescription medications that need to be regularly refilled, consider looking for a pharmacy that is close to where you live. When you find one near you, take some time to make sure that they are reputable.
Once you have found a way to reliably refill your prescription, consider some of the following ways you can remember to take them more consistently.
Use a Pillbox
One of the best ways to remember to take your medications is by using a pillbox. These small, handy containers can allow you to fit all your day’s medications into each compartment. When you need to take one pill, you can see all the other ones that you need to take later in the day as a reminder as well.
Tie in Reminders with Existing Routines
A lot of the time, medicines need to be taken with food and water. In such a way, it can be easy to tie in your medication routine with an existing routine. Take your medications when you are drinking water after working out or after eating dinner.
Set Alarms
Perhaps the most straightforward and reliable way to make your medications a part of your routine is to set alarms. Using your phone, computer, or even a traditional digital or analog clock alarm, you can set up a system to remember when you need to take your prescriptions.
Some people will even wait to turn off their alarms until after they have taken their medication. Try to take medications with water and food, when possible, as this makes them easier for your system.
By practicing good habits, you will be able to create a routine that helps you keep up with your medication. With a little bit of trial and error, you will find a solution that works best for you.
