Staying Warm On A Winter Run

If you're a runner, you know that bad weather can't stop your workouts. As the weather turns colder, it can be hard to stay fit while staying warm. If your body temperature drops too low, running becomes difficult and you run the risk of damaging your tendons and joints.

Staying warm not only keeps you comfortable but also keeps you healthy. So how do you stay warm while you're running in the winter weather?

Bundle Up

The best thing you can do to avoid getting too cold while running is bundling up. Adding bulk to your normal running gear will allow you to maintain your routine while staying insulated and comfortable.

Depending on how cold it is when you're getting ready for a run, you may only need something like a windbreaker and leggings, or you may need a full coat and insulated leggings. If the wind chill is below 20 degrees, look into running hats and gloves to help keep you warm.

Your ears and fingers tend to get cold the fastest, so protecting them against the wind will help you stay comfortable.

Layering warmth over your normal running outfit is another great way to maintain your perfect comfortable temperature while you run. No matter what temperature it is outside, your body temperature will change depending on what stage of your run you're at.

By wearing layers that can be removed rather than simply dressing warm, you can adjust your clothes to suit your body temperature. By adding some warm clothes to your regular workout outfits, you can stay active no matter what the weather.

Stay Moisturized

No matter how warm you are, any exposed skin can take a beating when you're running in the winter. Taking care of your skin is a must if you plan on staying active. One of the biggest things you can do for your skin in the winter is to keep it moisturized.

When you're out running, the cold wind on your skin can crack and damage it. By adding an extra layer of moisture to your skin before you go out, you can help prevent that damage from ever happening.

Even when you're not out running, you should keep your skin moisturized. This is the perfect time to switch your normal body care products for something a little more hydrating and begin to use lotion regularly.

In addition to keeping your body moisturized, you should also take some extra care of your face and lips. This skin is more delicate and cracks easier, so it's important to keep it hydrated to prevent discomfort when you're out running.

Taking care of your skin before you ever get out into the cold can help minimize the damage your skin takes when you do face the harsh weather.

Rotate Your Gear

Another way you can stay warm in the winter months while you're out running is having the proper attire. The gear you run in during the summer months won't suit you well when you're running in the winter.

One of the most important changes you'll need to make is your shoes. Summer shoes usually are mostly made of mesh to keep you cool, so you'll want to switch to something with a more solid body. This will prevent your feet from getting wet in the snow and slush, keeping you warmer as you run.

As trivial as it sounds, you should also wear sunglasses when you're running in the wintertime. If there's any snow on the ground, the glare can hurt your eyes if you're outside for a decent amount of time.

On top of protecting your eyes, sunglasses can also help keep your face warm and lessen the amount your eyes and nose run. This makes your run more enjoyable and keeps your skin healthier over time. Staying in the proper gear while you run can keep you comfortable while you're staying fit.

Conclusion

Overall, you don't have to sacrifice your fitness simply because of the weather. By adapting your running kit and practice, you can be comfortable and safe while you're out there this winter.
