Report Confirms Many Cosmetic Products Have Lingering Damaging Effects

Trusted Health Products

What comes to mind when you think of cosmetics? For most people, makeup items are usually what spring to thought. However, when you think about it there are so many items that are designed to help improve cosmetic or outward appearance. Even the FDA defines cosmetics as - articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body...for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance" in section 201(i) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

So really, everyone uses some sort of cosmetic product whether its makeup or even just toothpaste. Most readily available brands on the market today contain numerous chemical additives, and a new report from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health sheds some very unpleasant light on cosmetic products. Some of them, which you may or may not have in your home, have even hospitalized people in the past.

The National Register of Adverse Effects from Cosmetic Products 2008-2010 lists moisturizers as the top offender, accounting for more than half of all adverse reports, while the most commonly reported event was eczema. Strange, how it seems that the use of moisturizers could be correlated with increased events of conditions relating to dry and scaly skin. Other such issues reported were dermatitis, itching, acne, and even some cases of anaphylactic shock.

While its not surprising that such reactions have occurred from the use of synthetic chemical based products, it is somewhat shocking to know that products that cause such responses continue to be sold to the tune of millions of dollars per year. While we are constantly being bombarded with microwaves, radio waves, and other forms of radiation on a daily basis, we continue to exacerbate the issue by caking on layers of chemical laden products so that we can stay young. In reality, were aging ourselves at an alarming rate. Toxic overload can be a real killer, and when the body gets loaded down with toxins like these, it cannot perform at optimum levels. In some cases, the immune system even begins to fail from this.

It's important that work like this continues to be done by groups like the NIPH, although its just as important that we take heed and change our lifestyles accordingly. A great option for the average person is to visit the cosmetic database of the Environmental Working Group. Here, you can search through cosmetic products by name or category and find out exactly what sorts of toxins are lurking in your medicine cabinet. You'll surely be surprised, and you might even be appalled.   Sources: Norwegian Institute of Public Health Environmental Working Group EurekAlert! US Food and Drug Administration
