How Much Do You Really Know About Garlic's Health Benefits?

Garlic a well-known natural health remedy that is considered a super vegetable from the bulb family has lots of great health benefits. Besides flavoring your food, garlic treats various ailments and is a natural way to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and heart disease risk.

Garlic is rich in vitamin B6, which has cancerfighting abilities and is needed for a healthy immune system and efficient growth of new cells.

Garlic contains a chemical called ajoene which helps treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm and athletes foot.

Garlic Actions

Garlic can reduce cardiovascular disease and reduces the aortic plaque deposits on the walls of your veins. It also helps protect the heart from cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis and heart attacks. Animal studies, and some early research studies in humans, have suggested possible cardiovascular benefits of garlic. Many studies found garlic supplementation reduced accumulation of cholesterol on the vascular walls of animals and in humans.

Another study had similar results, with garlic supplementation significantly reducing aortic plaque deposits of cholesterol-fed rabbits. Supplementation with garlic extract inhibited vascular calcification in human patients with high blood cholesterol. Garlic has anti-clotting properties and helps in the thinning of blood to reduce the chances of blood coagulation. Garlic can also moderately lower blood triglycerides and total cholesterol levels.

Garlic aids in the prevention of multiple types of cancer and has reduced tumors in bladder cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer and stomach cancer. Its antibacterial and analgesic properties help relieve toothaches.

Garlic reduces blood sugar while enhancing blood insulin levels, and increases insulin release and regulates blood sugar levels in diabetics. Regular and prolonged use of therapeutic amounts of aged garlic extracts lower blood homocysteine levels and has been shown to prevent some complications of diabetes mellitus. People taking insulin should not consume medicinal amounts of garlic without consulting a physician.

Garlic strengthens the immune system and helps fight coughs, congestion and chest infections. In the winter it fights off colds and flu, has anti-inflammatory properties to combat allergies, also boosts your immune system and contains properties that remedy respiratory problems. It is also a great detoxifying agent and cleanser for your body.

Garlic also helps babies gain weight while they are in the womb, treats fungal and bacterial vaginal infections, and can stop itching caused by rashes and bug bites as well as keep away mosquitoes.
