If you’re losing bone density because of osteoporosis, you can take a proactive approach to slow or even reverse some of the effects of this medical condition. By taking the right measures, you’ll have a better chance of keeping your bones stronger while lessening the chances of sustaining bone fractures, chronic pain and other problems that are associated with osteoporosis. Here are four specific things that you can do to fight osteoporosis at home.

Do Weight-Bearing Exercises

Weight-bearing exercises don’t involve lifting heavy weights but instead involve standing on your feet to allow the force of gravity to work against your bones and muscles. This effect can strengthen bones and muscles better and works as a great natural treatment for many of the symptoms of osteoporosis. Some of the best weight-bearing exercises include brisk walking, step aerobics and jumping rope. You can also get a good weight-bearing workout by gardening, mowing your lawn or performing other chores around the home.

Get The Right Nutrients

Vitamin D and calcium are essential for bone health and can slow the effects of bone loss. Milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products are excellent sources of vitamin D and calcium, or you can also get more of these nutrients by taking supplements. Getting enough vitamin K may also strengthen bones and decrease the risk of fractures, and you can increase your intake by eating more foods like mustard greens, chicken and avocados.

Take Additional Medications

Your doctor may have prescribed medications to help treat osteoporosis, but there are some additional medications and supplements that you might want to consider adding to your treatment regimen. Collagen supplements have been shown to work well in the fight against bone loss. There are also anabolic osteoporosis treatments that can be injected and often give postmenopausal women good results. As always, you’ll want to consult with your doctor before starting any new treatments.

Make Better Lifestyle Choices

Unhealthy habits and other bad lifestyle choices can be harmful to your bone health and worsen the symptoms of osteoporosis. If you smoke, making the decision to quit can be effective in combating osteoporosis. Being overweight or underweight can also be bad for your bones, and you might want to consider working with a nutritionist or personal trainer if you have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. Drinking too much alcohol can also be bad for bones and should be avoided.

You can take control of your health and keep your bones stronger by finding ways to keep osteoporosis in check. You’ll likely notice a big difference in your bone health when you make the right changes and follow through on your treatment plan.
