Kalettes Are Healthy And Versatile

Trusted Health Products

I always thought that Miss Piggy and Kermit were the cutest couple on Sesame Street until I stopped and thought about it: a pig and a frog? Yeesh! And I wasn't sure how to feel about kalettes, the offspring of an equally odd couple, which also happens to be composed of my two favorite veggies - kale and Brussel sprouts.

I think we can all agree that a Brussel sprout looks like a cabbage with a serious inferiority complex. Then at the other extreme, kale looks like a narcissistic bunch of collard greens. And their progeny, kalettes, look ornamental, frivolous, and utterly useless - you know like a certain reality T.V. show on the E-Network. But they taste sensational - sweet and nutty - and theyre anything but useless. So how could I resist?

Its Been A Hard Days Night

Besides, technically speaking, kalettes aren't really a Frankensteinian monster since both kale and Brussel sprouts are related to cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower.

A British vegetable breeding company called Tozer Seed underwrote the grand experiment undertaken in 1995 by a not-so-mad-scientist-after-all named Dr. James Claxton to cross breed these two members of the genus Brassica. Twenty years later, after many trials and a lot of errors, kalettes are all the rage. And this month, they've hit the shelves in American markets like British rock stars!

High Hopes For A Hybrid

Like hybrid cars which get better mileage than traditional cars, this hybrid veggie is equally fuel efficient. Health conscious shoppers will benefit from the anticarcinogenic phytochemicals derived from kale, which help prevent colon and breast cancer. And, by the way, hybrid veggies are not genetically modified; they are simply cross-bred. Their DNA remains exactly as Mother Nature intended.

And speaking of DNA, Brussel sprouts can protect your DNA. They contain chemicals that block DNA-destroying sulfotransferase enzymes. And lets not forget how fabulously fiber-filled Brussel sprouts are.

Likewise, kalettes are little champions that pack a big punch in the fight against cancer and other degenerative diseases. They are also high in vitamins C and K.

Delicious Drizzles And Dribbles

And kalettes are as versatile as they are healthy. You can steam or roast them and dribble on a little olive or rapeseed oil. How bout an onion-blue cheese-and-kalette bake? Heavenly! A kalette and orange slice salad drizzled with a little oil and vinegar? Kale-icious!

Be the first kid on your block to try this remarkable new veg on the block and enjoy all the healthy benefits and yumminess it has to offer.
