The pandemic - and remote work as a consequence - have turned every ones’ lives upside down. People have been working from their homes for over a year now while the pandemic doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. With blurry or vanished barriers between work and private lives, employees experience low productivity and mental health issues.
While companies usually provide some kind of support, remote employees are mostly on their own. They support each other and share tips among themselves on how to stay productive and sane throughout remote work. Here are some tips to help you out.
When it comes to remote work, you can easily fall into a common trap. That trap is distractions which can be found all over your home. Whether those distractions are your kids or other family members, Netflix or the pile of laundry waiting to be done, it doesn’t matter. They can easily take your mind off work assignments and projects.
The only way to stay away from this trap is to gain self-discipline. This means you should get into deep focus while you work and avoid thinking about anything else. If your house is too big of a distraction, try to work from a coffeeshop nearby or your porch.
Since there are no longer any boundaries between your private and professional life, you should train your mind to switch between these two. When you sit down to work, don’t think about kids or errands and vice versa. More importantly, try to unplug after work hours and dedicate yourself completely to your family.
Rely on Advanced Tools
Whether we want to admit it or not, technology makes our lives significantly easier. Especially in these circumstances where the boundary has become blurry and you are experiencing too many changes in the workplace, you could use some help. Let technology be the extra pair of hands you need at least in the office.
Therefore, you can rely on advanced communicative and collaborative tools such as an employee app to keep in touch with coworkers and managers. Also, you will be able to work together and receive important updates which will help you do your job better. When you rely on such tools, you don’t have to worry about your job, because they have got you covered. Hence, there is one less thing you have to worry about.
Put Yourself First
This piece of advice might sound selfish but it is the most honest advice you will ever receive. When you aren’t at your best, you can’t be there 100 percent for your family or work. In this situation, both sides suffer in some way. For this reason, you should put yourself first instead of neglecting your needs.
If you feel overwhelmed and could use some rest, take a day off or ask your partner or family members to take care of your kids. Having some time to yourself will help you unwind from all those duties and responsibilities you have as a partner, parent, and employee. During your day-offs, you can get some rest, enjoy a bubble bath, or workout. Afterward, you will feel energized and fresh.
Dress the Part
When people start working remotely, they somehow stop dressing up for work. They rarely leave their sweatpants or pajamas. No wonder they struggle with productivity. If you are looking to enhance it yourself, then you should dress the part.
Namely, when you dress up for work although you are just going to sit behind your desk in another room, your brain prepares for work assignments. Thus, you become more productive. When you finish work for the day, you can take off your work clothes and dress casually because it is time for relaxation.
Make Plans in Advance
When you started to work remotely, have you noticed how your day lost its structure? You had to start anew and come up with a new structure. What could help you reorganize is making plans in advance. This means you should make a to-do list every day both for work and private life and prioritize the items from the list.
More importantly, you should enlist only achievable objectives. Otherwise, you will become overwhelmed trying to go through the list. Similarly, you can divide childcare responsibilities with your partner and switch according to your schedules. Organization and plans will help you keep everything under control.
On the whole, employees don’t have it easy when it comes to remote work, the pandemic, and family commitments. In fact, they are struggling now more than ever trying to juggle it all, stay sane, healthy, and productive. With our tips, you can weather this storm successfully.
