Looking for ways to be more sustainable to better our planet? Many people are turning to greywater systems as a viable solution for the future. Not sure what that is? Simple! It’s a system that collects the wastewater your home or even an office creates - with the exception of wastewater from the toilets - and reuses it for flushing toilets, landscaping, irrigation, and other uses.

In urban areas in particular, this has become a fantastic solution for the dwindling water supply. But you can install a greywater system anywhere and be part of the solution!

What A Greywater System Does

Unlike complicated plumbing systems, it’s very easy to update to a greener lifestyle by maximizing your greywater disposal. When you get a greywater system, it filters your water by using a multi-stage filtration process which removes hair, lint, and other things.

Once filtered, it’s sent right to your garden for irrigation. You can usually connect it outside your home with the connection running from household appliances - like the dishwasher or washing machine - and your shower.

From there, the collected water is filtered without chemicals and then sent to your yard. You can route it to your lawn, flower beds, and other landscaping areas.

By doing so, you’re saving the world from wasted water by repurposing it and you’re also getting a lower water bill. You’re also keeping greywater from flowing into sensitive ecosystems, reducing pollution, and saving energy.

If you run on a septic system, you’ll reduce the burdens on it so it won’t cause as many problems too. This small change will make a big change for the world! As an example, most people used to leave their sinks running when they brushed their teeth. Now most people turn the sink off as they brush which saves a lot of water and has been extremely beneficial for us all.

Why You Need a greywater system

The EPA recommends we all look to the future of water recycling for these reasons listed above. In urban areas, you can look for collaborative efforts to utilize greywater systems. If you own your own home and garden, having a greywater system added is a great way to make a change right now.

Your garden can benefit from your 10-minute shower, something that would use up 25 gallons of water. If you’ve ever had water restrictions imposed, using a greywater system can get around that. You simply change the filter and let the greywater system do its thing to keep your lawn and garden green. All you need to do is switch to a low-phosphate laundry detergent which you can find anywhere.

Call your local plumber and they can come install the system with ease. There’s no need to install underground systems or retrofit your plumbing. With all that you’ll save on using a greywater system, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of this before!
