Chlorella is a nutrient-dense alga that people often refer to as a fix-all supplement. The exact nutrient contents of chlorella can depend on the species used, growing conditions, and how supplements are used. However, chlorella can offer a range of health benefits, including fighting cancerous cells, promoting weight loss, and boosting antibody count. Vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals are some of the nutrients you could find in chlorella. Experts suggest that chlorella could produce enough nutrients to feed the global population. Others suggest it can be an alternative source of renewable fuel that can be used for running agricultural equipment. These are some of the health benefits you are likely to get from this nutrient-dense alga.

Protection Against Dementia

Studies have proved that chlorella can aid in preventing age-related ailments. It could be due to the impact that its antioxidant has on the brain. However, researchers seem not sure whether chlorella can have the same impact on humans.

Improved Aerobic Endurance Capacity

Taking at least 15 tablets of chlorella daily for a month can help increase your peak oxygen intake. That could mean that chlorella can help improve your aerobic endurance capacity. Chlorella might one day be used as a supplement for athletes. However, its use may be limited in various ways.

Safe Pregnancy

Chlorella contains minerals and vitamins that can help lower blood pressure during pregnancy. A study on Japanese women who took chlorella supplements daily during their pregnancy has proved that chlorella can help lower anemia levels and reduce signs of pregnancy-induced hypertension. However, it might be prudent to consult your doctor before taking any chlorella supplement during pregnancy. Not all supplements can be safe for the unborn child and the pregnant woman.

Fighting BPA

Estrogen is a hormone that tends to occur naturally in the body. However, some substances can mimic the way it functions and end up damaging the body. Anything that mimics the activity of estrogen can be referred to as xenoestrogens. These substances can enter the body through plastics, air, water, and contaminated soil. Xenoestrogens are often associated with high chances of developing various types of cancers. A 2009 study showed that chlorella could be used for fighting a xenoestrogen known as bisphenol-A.

Boost The Immune System

A study in 2012 looked at how chlorella can impact the human immune system. Participants who took chlorella tablets daily for two months underwent significant biological changes that could suggest that this nutrient-dense alga can strengthen the immune system. While some treatments and medical conditions might weaken your immune system, benefits of chlorella can help you stay healthy when this happens.

Improved Cholesterol Levels

Recent studies suggest that a daily intake of chlorella supplements may help lower cholesterol levels. For example, taking five to 10 grams of chlorella every day can help lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in people with elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure. Chlorella may also help improve levels of lipids in the blood. It can also help prevent LDL cholesterol oxidation, which is often associated with heart disease.

Manage Respiratory Diseases

Controlling inflammation often comes in handy when managing respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Luckily, chlorella contains oxidants and some components that can help control inflammation. Several studies have found that chlorella supplements can help COPD patients improve their antioxidant status. However, that may not always translate to improved breathing capability. More studies may be necessary to help prove the real effects of chlorella on respiratory conditions.

Chlorella is a new supplement that can seemingly treat any condition. It has shown that it can help improve the immune system, lower cholesterol levels, and control blood pressure. Chlorella can also help increase aerobic endurance capacity, manage respiratory diseases, protect against dementia, and fight BPA. It is suggested that chlorella could be a fix-all supplement to various ailments. It might also serve as an alternative source of renewable fuel that can be used for agricultural purposes.
