Exercises To Help You Improve Your Physical Health When You Have Osteoporosis

A bone-weakening disorder that can often lead to fractured hips and spines, osteoporosis is considered to be one of the most debilitating conditions in older adults. Found in both men and women, it can often lead to a decreased quality of life if not properly treated.

One of the best ways to combat osteoporosis is through exercise, which can help to strengthen bones, improve balance, and much more. If you suffer from this condition, here are some forms of exercise you may find will improve your health and day-to-day living.

Strength Training

After talking with your doctor, you may be given the go-ahead to start doing various strength training exercises such as using free weights like dumbbells. Particularly good for your upper back and spine, using free weights can help maintain bone density and good posture. However, it's best to work with a personal trainer or physical therapist at first since this will help you learn good techniques and avoid injury.

Walking

The simplest type of exercise you can do, walking is almost always recommended for people who suffer from osteoporosis. Best of all, you can do this form of exercise by either going out your front door and walking around your neighborhood, heading to a nearby park, or purchasing a treadmill and doing your walking inside the comfort of your home.

Dancing

Whether you have always enjoyed dancing or have just decided to take it up now, dancing can be a surprising but very effective way to fight your osteoporosis. No matter what type of dancing you prefer, you can get together with your significant other or some friends and work up quite a sweat while having plenty of fun.

Climbing Stairs

If you are not experiencing balance problems and have the physical capacity to do so, climbing stairs will be a wonderful way to keep your bones as strong as possible. Since you probably have stairs at your home, you can incorporate this form of exercise into your daily routine while doing housework or other tasks.

Gardening

Finally, working in your yard can be a fun way to maintain healthy bones. From planting a few new flowers to mowing and trimming some weeds, you'll get plenty of exercise while also enjoying fresh air and sunshine.

Whether you do one of these exercises or perhaps all of them, you and your doctor may be pleasantly surprised at just how much your health starts to improve.
