If you stare at a screen all day, then you will probably have to deal with dry eyes at some point in your lifetime. That problem can be extremely aggravating, but there are a few simple steps that you can take to ensure that your eyes remain healthy and well-lubricated.

Blink More Often To Prevent Dry Eye

Many people who stare at screens for hours on end blink at very slow rates, and that can lead to chronic dry eyes and general discomfort. When you blink, your body flushes away contaminants and lubricates the outside of the eyes. Consciously forcing yourself to blink a few extra times every minute could have a huge impact on your overall eye health.

Use Artificial Tears To Prevent Dry Eye

Using eye drops is another simple step that you can take to ensure that your eyes remain properly lubricated. Those drops mimic your natural tears, and they will clear away contaminants as well as reduce inflammation.

For long-term relief, you might also want to invest in lubricating eye gels or ointments. Those products are slightly thicker than traditional eye drops, but they tend to last much longer. All of those drops and gels can be purchased at most pharmacies and general stores without a prescription.

Follow The 20-20-20 Rule For Dry Eye

Many medical professionals are now telling their patients to follow the 20-20-20 rule if they are struggling with eyes that are constantly dry from staring at screens. To minimize eye strain, you can look away from your computer every 20 minutes at an object that is at least 20 feet away for around 20 seconds. Looking at objects that are in the distance relaxes the eyes and gives them time to become lubricated once again.

Undergo A Blepharitis Treatment For Dry Eye

Your eyelids are naturally going to trap bacterial debris and other contaminants over time, and that can result in ongoing inflammation as well as chronic dry eyes. With a blepharitis dry eye treatment, a doctor will be able to remove that bacterial film so that your eyes don’t feel as dry and itchy. They can also unclog some of the pores and ducts around the eyes that might have debris trapped inside them.

In addition to these few tips and tricks, you might want to consider investing in some computer glasses as well. Those types of glasses have photochromic lenses, and that means they are going to block the harmful blue light that is emitted by computer displays, smartphones, and tablets.
