4 Ways To Prepare For Lasik Surgery

As with every other type of medical procedure, it is best for the patient to prepare, even days ahead, for Lasik surgery. Preparation increases the chances of a good outcome from this surgery to correct refractive errors of the eye. Here are four ways to prepare:

Stop Wearing Contact Lenses

Many people are surprised at this step. But the fact is that contact lenses actually change the shape of the cornea. Since the ophthalmologist needs to measure the cornea with great accuracy for a successful operation, the patient will need to stop wearing contacts well before their Lasik surgery. If they wear hard contact lenses, they'll need to take them out a month to two months before the procedure. If they wear rigid gas permeable or toric soft lenses, they should stop wearing them three weeks before the surgery. Experts recommend the patient stop wearing soft contacts anywhere from 24 hours to two weeks before the surgery.

Another thing to consider when it comes to the eyes is to not wear any facial creams, lotions or makeup, especially makeup around the eyes such as mascara or eye shadow, on the day of the treatment. It’s also best to avoid perfume as well.

Arrange For A Driver

The patient should arrange for someone to at least drive them home after the surgery, even if they don’t live too far away from the eye surgeon’s office. Their vision will be blurry, and they’ll still be experiencing the after-effects of the anesthesia.

Don’t Drink Alcohol

Unlike major surgeries, the patient won’t need to fast overnight before coming in for Lasik surgery. However, they should avoid alcohol or any medication or substance that makes them drowsy before their operation.

Clear The Calendar

Lasik surgery doesn’t take that long. A typical surgery only takes about 10 minutes. However, the patient should pretty much clear their calendar on the day of their treatment. They’ll need to show up early to the office to fill out paperwork, ask and answer any questions with regards to the surgery, undergo the surgery then go home to recover from it.

Four precautions for the Lasik patient include swapping contact lenses for glasses, making sure that someone is available to drive them home and stay with them for a while; avoiding alcohol or any soporific, and giving themselves plenty of time. These preparations go far in helping a patient’s Lasik surgery be successful.

  • Thanks for mentioning not drinking alcohol since it could make you drowsy during the operation. I’m debating on getting Lasik eye surgery since I’m tired of wearing contacts. I’ll be sure to find a center that has a good plan for me and has high reviews online. http://eyecaresurgery.com/lasik/
