10 Tips For Creating A More Sustainable Bathroom

1. Consider using less harmful VOC paint

If you have to do some much-needed renovation or you simply wish to upscale the outlook of your bathroom in an eco-friendlier way, you should start by repainting it in a low VOC paint color.

Most homeowners are not familiar with this but most paints contain Volatile Organic Compounds which have carbon-based chemical compounds that are utterly harmful to our health and the environment. Instead, you should consider using a less harmful VOC paint that also comes in a multicolored pallet option.

2. Go for “green” accessories

The right bathroom accessories can maximally transform the outlook of your bathroom. And if you aim to think about Mother Nature, you can still get quality bathroom accessories and at the same time look after your carbon footprint.

Choose countertops or mirror and shower shelves that are made from glass, wood, or stone that both give out an exquisite look and are better for the environment. Whenever you are choosing accessories such as robe hooks, towel rails, soap holders, and cabinets, try to get those that are made from natural, organic materials as they are free from pollution-causing chemicals.

3. Replace the shower curtain

Believe it or not, vinyl, PVC, and plastic shower curtain liners are venomous and hazardous for the planet. First of all, they are not recyclable and if burnt, they give off deleterious fumes.

Secondly, they can be toxic thus harmful to our overall health. With these things in mind, it's a smart option to replace your shower curtain with materials like natural cotton, bamboo, or hemp. Another option is to install a glass showers screen which is far more eco-friendly.

4. Opt for LED bulbs

If you are aiming to cut costs and at the same time keep a watchful eye on the planet, you could start with changing your existing bulbs and adding LED ones. You would save an enormous amount of money on your electricity bill, plus you would be on the perfect road to completely have a sustainable bathroom.

A high percentage of LED’s energy is turned into light rather than heat which contributes to fantastic eco-friendly efficiency. What’s more, besides helping you save the planet, they can contribute to having a more sprucing bathroom outlook.

Even though this is easier said than done, but with a fact that an average toilet consumes over 10,000 gallons of water per year, it's extremely vital to save water. Luckily, you could do that fairly easily and without even noticing.

Try to cut down on having long and serene baths to having nice eight-minute showers. This is a huge difference as having a shower will use around 60 liters of water in contrast to around 100 liters you would need for a bath.

Next, try to install a dual flush system or low-flow fixtures so you could reduce the amount of water wasted from flushed toilets. In the end, don't let the water run while you are brushing your teeth. These small changes will help you save water and look after the planet mindfully.

Plants act as a natural air-purifying machine, and they can absorb can dioxide and release clean oxygen which immediately improves the room's air quality. As they remove toxins from the air, they also contribute to making your bathroom look more sensational and luscious, which is a win-win thing.

9. Read the shampoo and skincare labels

Nowadays, many cosmetic companies are aiming to offer more healthy, vegan, and sustainable products to their customers. So, when it comes to purchasing bathroom products and supplies, you must pay attention to the ingredients used in these products and make sure that they're not harmful to our health and the planet.

It would be smarter to go for soap bars and reduce packaging, but it's also efficient to use any type of natural ingredients when it comes to skincare. Even though products that keep in mind their environmental effect are more expensive, it's still a way better solution than buying shampoo and other bathroom amenities that contain harmful ingredients.

10. Choose recycled materials

Whenever you have an option to swap fancy materials to recyclable ones, do it. Today you can find recyclable materials for any type of renovation you are doing. Recyclable tiles are a great way to spruce up the look of your bathroom and stay eco-conscious. Some types of recyclable materials include shattered glass, broken sanitary ware, and leftover ceramics.
