What Happens To Your Eyes As You Age?

Your eyes will change with the natural aging process, and there are eye problems that you must understand so that you can overcome the health issues. It is important to care for your eyes so that you don’t lose visual acuity, and there are several medical experts who can help you.

Needing A New Eyeglass Prescription

While you may never have needed eyeglasses before, you may need to wear bifocals to read smaller print. In some cases, you might need eyeglasses that are designed for nearsightedness, astigmatism or farsightedness. An optometrist will complete an examination on your eyes to look for abnormalities or to determine if you need vision correction. Eyeglass lenses are customized to meet your needs, and you can choose frames that you like.

Developing Dry Eyes

In addition to dry skin, you can develop dry eyes, and this can make it difficult to see. With dry eyes, your tear ducts won’t produce enough moisture, making it hard to blink. The surface of your eyes can feel itchy and irritated most of the time. You can buy eye drops at a drugstore, but there are also prescription eye drops that are often more helpful. Use the directions on the medication so that your eyes will feel moist, helping you to see better each day.

Cloudy Lenses In The Eyes

If you have cataracts, then you will have cloudy lenses in your eyes. This can occur in one or both eyes. However, there is a surgery available to remove the natural lenses before inserting artificial lenses. The surgery for this vision problem is fast and easy, but afterward, you will need to use single dose cataract surgery steroids to reduce and eliminate any infection in the eyes.

Glaucoma

When you have a vision examination, the optometrist or an assistant will perform an air puff test on your eyeballs to determine if you have glaucoma. This test can determine if there is too much pressure inside the eyes, and if there is too much pressure, then this can damage the optic nerves at the back of the eyeballs. Fortunately, there are medications to relieve the pressure in the eyeballs, but it is also possible that you will need surgery to reduce the amount of fluid in the eyes.

Last, if you are a diabetic, then you can develop retinopathy in the eyes that reduces the blood supply to the retina. This can lead to problems with your visual acuity, but there are surgeons who can repair the blood vessels in your eyes.
