There are currently many things to try if you suffer from acne breakouts. Try a few or all of these ideas and prepare for your acne to clear up.
For years it was thought that certain foods cause acne. They were typical teen favorites like chocolate and fries. Current research has shown something different, however. Now the professional opinion is that it's not so much what you eat that can cause a breakout, but what nutrients you aren't getting by eating less healthy foods.
To save you the trouble of figuring out what you need, and in what amounts, there are now vitamins for acne. Not only should they improve general health, but they are also specifically formulated to improve skin quality.
The best thing to wash your acne-prone face with is a gentle all-purpose cleanser. In the past, medicated cleansers were recommended by doctors or prescribed by dermatologists. However, they tend to be overly drying and irritating to the skin. Be faithful to whichever cleanser you choose and wash your face with it when you wake up and before you go to bed.
Exfoliation means getting rid of whatever is affecting the top layer of your skin in a bad way. Usually, the culprits are dead skin cells, too much oil and unremoved dirt and makeup. There are two types of exfoliation: chemical and manual. The chemical type of exfoliation usually contains a mild acid and can, again, be very drying to your skin.
A better route is manual exfoliation. You're going to be washing your face twice a day anyway. Instead of splashing your cleanser off with water and hoping you removed all of the dirt and cleanser, try using an exfoliating cloth.
A face cloth on the rougher side could do the job but there are washcloths made especially for exfoliating and they are the better choice. Rinse the cloth and go over your face in a circular motion. Repeat this process two or three times until you feel like your face is totally clean.
Put each cloth in the laundry after use. You don't want to redeposit whatever you removed earlier. Keeping everything clean is very important when fighting skin breakouts.
Some acne-sufferers think that after cleansing they should then strip their skin of all oil with an alcohol-based toner. Actually, your skin produces oil for a reason, to keep your skin moisturized. Once your skin feels too tight, it will send out an overabundance of oil to try and moisturize it, which is the exact opposite of what you want.
Depending on the time of year, a serum might be all your skin needs to feel healthy and moisturized. There are many to choose from, so you should search for one with all-natural ingredients and made especially for acne-prone skin.
Don't skip sunscreen because you think it will make your acne worse. Not using sunscreen can open the door to other problems like sunburn, wrinkles, spots and even skin cancer. Sunscreen is not the white, oily pore clogger it once was. There are many acne-friendly sunscreens to choose from, even if you are prone to breakouts.
Red light therapy is beneficial to the skin in many ways, but the reduction of acne breakouts is probably the most noticeable. Once only available at a spa or a dermatologist's office, there are now red light therapy wands to be used at home.
Your bedding can actually improve your skin while you sleep. A pillowcase made from organic linen can be very calming for the skin. It is also antibacterial, will give your face a gentle massage as you move in your sleep and will absorb oil and perspiration.
Going the all-natural route is the best way to gently repair your troubled skin. Just be sure to take a "before" photo so you can track the progress you are making.
