Why Regular Dental Cleanings Are Important For Keeping Your Teeth Healthy

Like any other body part, your teeth require regular cleanings. Dental cleaning is a routine performed by a dental hygienist where your entire mouth is examined and plaque and tartar removed with the guidance of a small mirror.

There are four types of dental cleaning: prophylaxis dental cleaning, scaling and root planing cleaning, periodontal maintenance cleaning, and gross debridement cleaning - all equally important. It is important that you get regular dental cleanings because of the following reasons.

Prevent Tooth Decay

Plaque in your teeth decays to form an acid that erodes the enamel causing tooth decay. The erosion continues until cavities (holes) are formed on your teeth that cause more significant damage. Brushing is not enough to remove all plaque from your teeth and you are required to get dental cleanings to prevent decay and cavities.

Avoid Gum Diseases

Regular dental cleaning prevents this common oral affliction. Periodontitis is an infection that damages the gum's soft tissues and can destroy the bone that holds your teeth. It also leads to bleeding and causes bad breath. Dental cleaning, as well as proper brushing and flossing, avoids these infections.

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is caused by odor-producing germs in your mouth and can really affect your social life. Oral cancer usually appears as a sore or growth in your mouth that won't go away. At the end of teeth cleaning, the dentists always look for any potential oral cancer signs, which helps in the early detection of cancer. Early detection is crucial in fighting cancer, making regular dental cleaning essential.

Dental cleaning enables your dentist to look for any damages on your teeth and fix them, leaving your mouth healthier. This is also the perfect time to remove any stains on your teeth.
