Got an annoying mouth sore? Better known as canker sores, these are merely painful inconveniences that will usually resolve themselves in around 10 days. You may get them when you accidentally chomp the side of your cheek or inner lower lip, or they may be the result of eating food that’s too hot, skin rashes inside your mouth, or bacterial or viral infections.

Usually, they’re not at all serious and can be treated at home. If they persist though or you run a fever, or more seem to sprout up without any known cause, schedule an appointment with your dentist to get to the root of the problem.

You don’t have to suffer in pain though while your canker sores heal. You can try a few tricks at home that will both bring relief and help speed along the healing process.

Use a salt water or baking soda rinse

Most people tend to have salt as well as baking soda in their pantries. You can use these simple kitchen staples to find relief. For either salt or baking soda, you’ll take a teaspoon of it and dissolve it into a half cup of warm water. Then you’ll swish the mixture around in your mouth for 15 to 30 seconds before spitting it out.

With salt though, it can sting a little but it should help dry your mouth sores out and help them heal. Baking soda restores pH balance while reducing inflammation and has no sting. Try each and see how you feel!

Treat it with sweet honey

A spoonful of sugar might be helpful with medicine, but honey itself is medicine. It has long been known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, plus it is very effective in not only reducing the pain from your mouth sores but the size and redness as well.

You should be sure to choose raw, organic, unfiltered, and unpasteurized honey if you want to get the healing effects and healthful benefits from honey. Apply it four times per day and enjoy the sweetness.

Rinse with hydrogen peroxide

Many people swear by hydrogen peroxide as a mouth rinse though it’s certainly not going to win awards on taste. Still, it can heal your mouth sore by cleaning it and reducing the bacteria in your mouth that are causing the problems. You should use a 3% solution mixed with equal parts of water. If you’re not keen on using it as a mouth rinse, dab a cotton swab or cotton ball into your mixture and apply it right onto your canker sore several times a day.

Take supplements

Sometimes, you’re more vulnerable to canker sores when you’re not getting proper nutrition. When you have a deficiency in zinc, iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12, you may run into trouble. In particular, a zinc supplement can really help by boosting immunity and helping your body expel the offending germs.

It should go without saying that you should watch your intake of spicy or sour foods and drink plenty of fluids while you’re battling a canker sore. Practice good oral hygiene too and you should be rid of it soon!
