4 Tips For Keeping Your Teeth Healthy As You Age

Aging can have a serious impact on your oral health. However, there are a few ways that you can help make your teeth last for as long as possible. Here are four tips to consider to keep your teeth healthy as you age.

Consume Calcium-Rich Foods

One problem that older individuals face is a decrease in bone density. As you become older, your body starts to lose calcium. As a result, your bones and teeth become more brittle. It's easier to lose your teeth and break your bones.

To avoid that, you should consume foods that are rich in calcium and consider taking certain calcium supplements. By replacing the calcium that you're losing, you can keep your bones and teeth healthy.

Continue to Visit Your Dentist

At some point, you may feel like visiting your dentist isn't worth it anymore. It is. Dentists help you by keeping plaque from building up on your teeth. Without excess plaque building up on your teeth, your gums can stay healthy. It also decreases the risk of tooth rot and loss. Dentists can also help you determine any additional dental steps you need to take to preserve your teeth.

Have Implants Installed

If you do lose teeth, then you should consider having dental implants installed. Implants are connected to your teeth. They're different from dentures in that they are semi-permanently attached. They can be used just like normal teeth without concern about them breaking or falling out.

Implants are necessary if you have several teeth missing. Without them, it's likely that more of your teeth will fall out since they require pressure on the teeth beside them to remain in place. Implants can give you the brilliant smile that you're used to and keep the rest of your teeth in place and healthy.

Keep Brushing

The standard number of times you should brush your teeth is twice a day for two minutes. You should also floss and rinse mouthwash the same number of times. To ensure your teeth remain healthy, however, you may also want to add in brushing after meals.

This is especially true if you have denture implants. It's possible for food particles to become stuck underneath them. By regularly brushing your teeth, you can keep your gums healthy and your teeth strong.

The best course of action to keep your teeth healthy as you age is to use preventative measures immediately. Brush often, visit the dentist, and eat a diet rich in calcium and fiber to promote healthy teeth.
