Dental and oral health does not just come down to how well you floss and brush your teeth every day. It's actually the result of a wholly healthy lifestyle and there are many things you can do. Even working out though it may seem unrelated to your mouth can have an indirect effect on your oral health, so it's really an issue that you need to approach from a whole-body perspective.

What you eat of course is particularly relevant, and making sure you have the right things in your diet is going to have almost as big an impact on your teeth as brushing. But don't forget what you drink either there are plenty of ways that drinks can damage your teeth or help to improve their strength. Let's take a look at some of the best health drinks for your teeth and at why they are so beneficial.

Protein Shake

Everyone knows that teeth are made from calcium, but did you know that they also contain protein? That's also true for your gums, and so if you want to make sure you heal from any damage to your mouth then you need to make sure you get some protein.

The most popular form of protein shake is whey which is a bi-product of the cheese-making product - it comes from milk in other words. This is high in protein and low in fat, which makes it great for your overall health and particularly for athletes. Also be sure to select an organic brand.

Juice Smoothies

You might be wondering why fruit juice is on this list when it's well known that fruit can damage teeth due to the high quantities of sugar and acid. That's because fruit juice also has a lot going for it specifically in that it provides you with a lot of vitamins and minerals. The great thing about a smoothie is that you can pick and choose what goes in it so by choosing less acidic fruits - lemon and lime for instance are naturally basic meaning they're more neutral than apples say - and diluting them with some water you can limit the damage while still enjoying the benefits.

Grape Juice

Short term, grapes will stain your teeth, however, in the long run it does have some benefits to your oral health. In particular that's because it's very high in anti-oxidants and also contains resveratrol. Both of these ingredients help to make red wine one of the most powerful anti-cancer drinks available which can help you to fend of oral cancer if you're concerned. Resveratrol actually works by strengthening your cells' mitochondria which are the energy-generating sheaths that surround them. This means that drinking it will give you increased energy too! Look for an organic grape juice!

Organic Milk

Your bones and your teeth both require calcium in order to be strong and healthy, which milk provides in large quantities. Additionally, organic milk is a naturally alkaline drink which means it can limit the damage that acidic drinks do to your teeth. Organic milk works even better if you put it on a whole-grain cereal, as fiber is great at cleaning your teeth.

Organic Goats Milk

Organic goats milk will provide most of the same benefits as organic milk but is suitable for people with dairy intolerances.

Green Tea

Regular black tea isn't particularly good for your teeth despite the antioxidants as it will stain your teeth. Green tea however gives you the benefits of antioxidants without the staining and it can help to fight plaque. Green tea is also an alkaline as well, so this really is a good one to add to your routine!

Water

Best of all though is good old water which contains no acid or sugar and can help to wash your mouth out and remove trapped food and debris. Better yet, drinking lots of water will encourage you to produce more saliva which is a natural disinfectant. A lack of saliva is the reason that breath often smells in the morning, which should give you some indication of just how important it is that you produce it!
