Why A Plant-Based Skin Care Routine Is Best

Not only are plants beautiful to look at and good to eat, they are also good for your skin. Of course, a plant-based diet with lots of fruits and vegetables will help your skin glow from the inside, but plant-based skin care products will also help you glow from the outside.

Why Plant-Based Skin Care is Better

If you are a vegetarian, vegan or simply a clean food eater, you already know that natural and organic is best, and added chemicals are, for the most part, a bad idea. Carry this attitude over to your skin. Whatever you put on your skin will eventually travel into your body, just the same as if you ate it.

If you would not eat one of the ingredients in your current cleanser or moisturizer, then you might want to reconsider placing it on your skin. Read the labels of plant-based skin care products and you will see that the listed ingredients come from sources safe enough to eat.

The Most Popular Natural Skincare Product Ingredients and What They Do

Here are some of the natural ingredients that are commonly found in facial cleansers, oils and moisturizers with an explanation of what they do for complexions.

Cannabinoid oil (CBD oil) is showing up everywhere these days and for good reason. It is made from the stalks and leaves of the hemp plant and is a multi-purpose product that is good for everything from treating anxiety to seizure control and moisturizing skin.

Some mistakenly believe CBD oil can give a "high" but that is not the case since it does not contain THC. When used on skin, CBD oil can moisturize and smooth any skin damage like cuts or cracks.

Made by distilling actual rose petals, rose water has been used on skin for centuries. It heals redness and irritation as well as being a powerful anti-aging ingredient and is believed to have first been used in the Middle East.

Jojoba oil is made from the nut of this very hardy North American desert plant. The oil can be used as a carrier for essential oils or on its own. Jojoba oil has very protective properties and actually forms a barrier on the skin's surface to keep moisture in and to keep harmful things like bacteria out. It can even help treat acne.

Coconut is currently showing up everywhere. Coconut milk is taking the place of dairy for those who are vegan or lactose intolerant.

It is also widely used as a supplement in the form of MCT oil. This stands for medium-chain triglycerides. When taken daily, it is said to provide many benefits including better brain function and superior performance in sports. When MCT oil is applied to the skin, however, it can reduce the appearance of both wrinkles and stretch marks.

What to Look For in a Natural Skincare Product

Now that you know some great ingredients and what they can do for your skin, choose some that are important to you and check the label of any skincare product you are planning to try. The ideal formula would combine the natural plant-based ingredients important to you based on your skin's needs.

Scent is also something you should investigate. If you are planning to use a product at bedtime, you might want to choose one with a soothing natural scent like lavender.

Fragrances can either be the result of one of the natural plant ingredients in the formula or from an added essential oil. If you are sensitive to any scents or plants, consider this before you purchase. After all, your nose is on your face so will definitely be affected when a particular formula is used.

Many skincare companies offer sample sizes of their products. This is an excellent way to discover new things and see what works the best for you. Choose companies with ingredients you would find in the grocery store, not in a chemistry lab.
