What To Do For Puffy Eyes

Puffy eyes are very common and most people will find themselves fighting them at some point. While they may be caused by many things, there are also a lot of things that you can do to treat them or reduce the puffiness. There are also ways to treat the other symptoms that come with puffy eyes, including irritation and redness, dark circles or discoloration around the eyes, or bags under the eyes.

The most common reason for puffy eyes is crying. When a person cries, inflammation or fluid build-up under the eyes will appear puffy and may be red around the eye as well. Something cool - a cold metal spoon or cut cucumbers or an eye mask that has been in the fridge or freezer - is a good choice to treat puffy eyes. It can also help to keep hands away from the eyes when crying, as you may have been rubbing and wiping them with irritating tissues or napkins.

Health Concerns

There are also some health concerns that can lead to puffy eyes. Pink eye, allergies, a high sodium diet that may also affect blood pressure, too many alcoholic beverages, too much sugar, and lack of sleep can all cause puffy eyes. To limit the likelihood of puffy eyes there are some proactive measures that you can take. A healthy diet that limits intake of salty foods and alcohol, while enjoying them moderately, is fine and will reduce puffy eyes.

Healthy Sleep Schedule

It is also important to create and maintain a healthy and consistent sleep schedule since many adults do not get as much sleep as they need – eight to 12 hours each night is recommended. The hours of sleep should fit with your own natural body patterns and needs to allow the body to properly rest and manage any additional fluids or puffiness, including around the eyes. When allergies are the cause, tracking down the allergy and reducing its presence is important. It may be an outside source such as trees or plants, or even pollution, or it could be something like a scent, perfume or soap. Once you have found the cause, removing it from your presence will help reduce swelling or puffy and red eyes. It may take a few days to see a visible difference and start maintaining it, or you may choose to try allergy medications for a faster result if you can’t remove the allergens.

Diet And Exercise

While dark circles, redness, or puffiness around the eyes may be covered with makeup, this won’t actually solve the problem and will simply appear as puffy eyes with makeup on them. To prevent or reduce them it may be necessary to change your diet, exercise, sleep patterns, or even find a medication to help with allergies. For a simple on-the-spot treatment to gain some relief, a cool cloth, eye mask, cucumber slices, or even a spoon, will help to reduce the swelling and fluid retention and decrease the redness.
