Vegan Skin Care - What To Know

Trusted Health Products

Written By Kassandra Foreman / Reviewed By Ray Spotts

As the popularity of a vegan lifestyle has grown, for many reasons, the accessibility of vegan skin care is growing along with it. For many who choose a vegan lifestyle they are not only cutting out foods from their diet but adjusting all areas of life, with skin care being a big focus.

Included in these considerations are cruelty-free products that are not tested on animals or involve any animal products, products that offer a reduction in artificial colors and preservatives, and products that are created with organic or natural products.

Vegan skincare ingredients

Vegan skin care does not use an animal product as ingredients, including honey and bees wax, lanolin, or other animal by-products. These products and ingredients are replaced by synthetic ingredients and often these have been ethically sourced as well.

Many skincare companies will also avoid any ingredients that have been created by coming in contact with animal products or by-products even if no animal has been harmed to make it.

Vegan vs. Cruelty-free

The difference between vegan and cruelty-free is sometimes in question. In general, cruelty-free ingredients are those that are not tested on or derived from animals in any way that can cause harm. Items that are created from animal products, but do not cause harm such as wool, milk, lanolin, and honey, are obtained without harming the animal.

Good for the skin

Along with the benefits of not harming animals and protecting a lifestyle, vegan skincare products are also good for the skin and are less likely to irritate it. These ingredients are chosen for their high antioxidant and nutrient contents and are often very easily absorbed through the skin so they can work quickly and efficiently.

To determine if a product is vegan it is not necessarily accepted as labeled. When checking the ingredients list ensure that they are not derived from animals. You can also check one of the websites created for this purpose.

Understanding skincare preservatives

The preservatives that are used in vegan skin care are often different from those that are used in traditional skincare products. Depending upon which are used they may last as long, or in some instances even longer, than those that are derived from animal products.

If there are no preservatives present, they will have a shorter shelf life and must be used faster. They also may be more susceptible to temperature changes and may be better stored in the fridge. The shelf life and how long they will last are listed on the products themselves.

Many products that are not labeled vegan are vegan friendly due to the success of the plant-based ingredients and the lack of need for animal products within them.

When choosing vegan-friendly skin care, it is easy to find a product that will work for you as they come with a wide range of purposes and nutrients. They are known for being high in vitamins that can help to reduce irritation, boost hydration, and slow the signs of aging.

They use no ingredients that have been derived from animals but will offer the same results as many that do.
