Looking for more natural ways to enhance your beauty? The answer may be as simple as a common pantry staple you steam up for dinner. Rice water, the water leftover from cooking rice, has been used for thousands of years in Japanese beauty techniques.

If it sounds unusual, consider the beauty of the hair and skin of Japanese women. And then there’s the simplicity of making rice water in your own kitchen which you can use on your hair and skin. Why not try it?

You can make your own rice water by simply soaking rice in water. You’ll want to let it sit for a good 30 minutes before straining it. To get the best effect, you should allow it to ferment for a couple days. You can also make it as you make dinner one night. Simply add double the water you need to cook your rice with, cook the rice, and then press out the water.

That precious rice water should then be stored in your refrigerator for use on your hair and skin. It can leave hair smoother, shinier, and stronger, plus it helps grow longer too. As for skin, you can brighten it up, calm inflammation, and naturally restore dry skin, particularly if it has been compromised by SLS and other chemicals.

Now that you have your rice water ready, here’s how to use it!

Apply it directly to your skin

Using a clean cotton pad, apply rice water to your skin. If you boiled it or let it ferment, it is best to dilute it with purified water first.

Rinse your hair with it

Massaging rice water into your hair and allowing it to sit for a while can really improve your tresses. You can add your favorite essential oils to it too so your hair will have a lovely natural fragrance. It’s best to add it from roots to tips and allow it to sit for a minimum of 10 minutes before rinsing.

Create your own hydrating and soothing face mask

If you have thick tissue paper on hand, you can use your rice water to saturate it and then apply it to your face. Even just using it as a toner or a cleanser, you won’t need to rinse which might make it the ideal thing to tote to the gym for a quick refresher for your skin.

Soak it up

Rice water also makes a perfectly soothing base for soaking in the tub. Add a little vitamin E and some essential oils to calm irritated skin and leave it feeling naturally hydrated.

With all these great benefits of rice water, it sounds like it’s time to get in on this traditional Asian beauty secret to look more ravishing and radiant than ever!
