As far as fruit oils go, citrus fruits tend to hold a special place on the spectrum, not just because they are so fundamentally effective but because there are so many of them. Bergamot is one and it is an incredibly helpful essential oil that can be used in many different ways.
Its scientific name is Citrus Bergamia and it is said to be a combination of a sour orange and a lemon. It's very closely related to the lemon but is more of a mutation than a pure form of the yellow fruit. In fact, the Bergamot is usually a greenish color. Like many other citrus fruits that we've been exploring lately, the oil is actually taken from the peel itself and not the pulp. All the good stuff is actually on the outside.
Its roots are tied to the southeast Asian region of the world, however, Bergamot can currently be found in various parts of the world such as Morocco, Turkey, Argentina and Brazil. The oil has a deep history of being used in the industry of perfume making as its natural aromas work well with other fresh and fragrant notes. Here are some of the key benefits that are associated with bergamot oil.
Aids Digestion
Sometimes we suffer from bloating, constipation, indigestion or some mixture of all of these issues. It's quite common to deal with stomach troubles that have you feeling incredibly uncomfortable at best or running to the bathroom more often than necessary, at worse.
We sometimes eat the wrong foods or have an allergic reaction which can start to throw off the way that our body digests food, which can lead to these troublesome symptoms. Rubbing a bit of bergamot oil into your lower stomach can be just what you need. It's also very helpful to have on hand if you develop food poisoning.
Skin Healing
Our skin is the largest organ of our body and the most exposed. It has to brave harsh elements and climate change. It is often the first place that shows when we are overly stressed or going through substantial life changes. If you are dealing with any type of discoloration or scarring, this is the oil that you should incorporate into your skincare regimen.
You can treat the irritations of your skin directly with the oil by putting a few drops on a cotton ball and dabbing it on the problem area.
Reduces Pain
This is because bergamot oil increases the secretion of necessary and effective hormones. This makes it, not only an oil that can be used for balancing out of whack hormones, but also lessens the sensitivity of the nerves that inform you of your pain.
If you have chronic muscle aches from standing long periods of time or being very active, this is a great oil to use. It's even very effective on headaches. Just a couple of drops put on your temples, or wherever the pain is, will help to lessen the tension and discomfort.
