When it comes to your body, you could probably identify a few places where you wouldn't mind seeing some improvement. Are your skin and hair included in the bunch? If they are, you might find the following useful - here are five tips to help make your skin and hair softer and healthier.

  1. Keep It Balanced

You are what you eat, and skin and hair are no exception to this rule. A diet rich in powerhouse vitamins - think leafy greens, Omega-rich foods such as walnuts and some fish, fatty avocados, lean meats and brightly colored vegetables are all key players in your body looking and feeling its best. And don't forget to hydrate...sipping water throughout the day will keep your system plump with moisture and your skin and hair happy, too.

  1. Go Straight To The Source

Do you find yourself applying an excessive amount of lotion to moisturize your dry skin after bathing? Is your freshly washed hair in a constant state of tangles or flyaways? If this sounds all too familiar to you, it might be time to get your water tested. Chances are your water could be laden with excessive chlorine or hard minerals such as magnesium and calcium - and they can do a real number on your skin and hair. The good news is you don't have to settle, because softer skin and hair are just two benefits of a water softener. If you make this change to your home, you may also notice an improvement in other things as well such as better tasting water and improved efficiency when washing dishes and clothing.

  1. Keep Your Cool

Who doesn't love a long, hot and relaxing shower? Even though the answer is "Basically no one," that doesn't mean you should make it a habit. The hotter and longer the shower, the more damage you'll do to your skin and hair. And while nobody is suggesting you take a cold one, keeping it lukewarm is a good place to start. If you tend to linger in there, setting a timer on your phone - because you know it's always in the bathroom with you - will help keep you on track.

  1. Exfoliate Correctly

How often do you take an extra few minutes to exfoliate the skin on your face and body? While there are so many ways to do it, some are definitely more effective and skin friendly than others, so be sure to research before jumping in. When done consistently and correctly, exfoliation will retexturize your skin, leaving behind an overall softer, smoother feel and appearance. Getting yourself on a regular schedule can prevent over or under exfoliating, so hurry up and add it to your self-care routine. Dermaplaning is also a great way to soften your skin - just make sure you know what you're doing before you attempt it on your own.

  1. Moisturize Deeply

Chances are you have a few half empty bottles of body lotion kicking around, along with some hair products that promised to be miracle workers. Maybe you're not totally sold on any of them, or maybe they're not delivering what your skin and hair actually need to be their best. The good news is that you might already have what you need on hand. There are several different oils - such as olive and coconut - that can pack a wonderful punch for moisturizing and softening skin and hair.

What's even better, they're typically very affordable and come without long lists of scary ingredients you can't pronounce. Try moisturizing your skin while it's still damp after bathing - especially after exfoliating - and massage the oil through your hair before bed. Wake up in the morning feeling awesome. Repeat.

The moral of the story? Getting softer, healthier skin and hair is within reach. Which tips will you try out?
