A regular skincare routine can keep you looking young and vibrant. Unfortunately, skin care blunders can wreak havoc on your skin and add years to your face. In order to preserve your looks, make sure that you follow a regular skin care routine that is gentle on your skin. If you notice that your skin has started to age, don’t blindly use an anti-aging cream, instead make sure that you are not guilty of skincare blunders that make you look older.

Skin Care Blunders

  1. Not using moisturizer because you have oily skin

When your skin produces too much sebum, it forms an oily coating on top of your skin. Cleansing your face will help to get rid of the excess oil but it can leave your skin dry and flaky which will make you look older. It is important to use a moisturizer every time you wash your face as this will help to lock in moisture and keep your skin soft and supple. You can also use a chemical-free and organic face oil twice a day to get rid of fine lines and give you a more youthful appearance.

  1. Not using enough sunscreen

Most of us just dab a little sunscreen on our cheeks and forehead and then massage it into our face. However, research shows that we need to apply a lot more sunscreen in order for it to be effective. The recommended amount is one ounce of sunscreen - the amount that would fill a shot glass - to cover your entire body. This would work out to approximately half a teaspoon for your face. It is also advisable to reapply your sunscreen every two hours, especially if you are outdoors. If you do not use an adequate amount of sunscreen, the UV rays of the sun will damage your skin and accelerate the aging process.

  1. Exfoliating too much or too little

Exfoliation is an important part of any skin care routine as it helps to get rid of the uppermost layer of dead skin to reveal fresh and healthy skin. However, if you exfoliate too much, you can irritate your skin and leave it looking rough and dry. On the other hand, if you do not exfoliate often enough, the dead skin cells will accumulate on your skin which will make your skin appear aged. Exfoliate one to two times a week and moisturize your skin after you use your scrub to help it stay soft and smooth.

  1. Using products with lots of synthetic chemicals

The chemicals in our beauty products get absorbed by our skin and then find their way into our bloodstream and to the rest of our body. Many of these chemicals have been linked to long-term health problems. For instance, many lotions contain parabens which accumulate in the body after long-term exposure. These parabens have been found in the breast tissue of patients with breast cancer which sparked public concern. Skin care products that contain a lot of synthetic chemicals can also damage your skin after prolonged use which can make you look older.

  1. Having an unhealthy lifestyle

We often think of skincare as the products we use to keep our skin looking young and healthy. However, our lifestyle and habits have a tremendous impact on our skin. Inadequate sleep, not enough physical activity, inadequate water intake and an unhealthy diet can make you look much older. Smoking and drinking are also associated with aging skin that is wrinkly and dull. Adopt a healthy lifestyle to enjoy better health and a youthful appearance.

As far as possible, use natural products in your regular skin care routine as this will help to prevent adverse reactions. People with skin conditions such as rosacea and eczema are more likely to have an adverse reaction to harsh skincare products. Similarly, people with psoriasis may notice that their some of their psoriasis symptoms such as itching and burning may get worse when they use certain products. If you have any skin condition or infection, visit a dermatologist for advice on a skincare routine that is suitable for your skin. If you notice any sudden changes in your skin, talk to your doctor as it could indicate a more serious underlying problem.
