Skin is the first line of protection for the rest of your body, so taking care of your skin is an essential part of healthy living. Here are five important skincare tips for 2021.
1. Get More Sleep
Believe it or not, skincare isn't all about using special serums and creams. There are lifestyle adjustments you can make that benefit your skin too, such as eating healthily and getting enough sleep. Sleep, in particular, has great restorative properties and it's essential for keeping all of your organs healthy, including your skin.
On the aesthetic level, getting more, better quality sleep can help reduce the prominence of undereye circles and prevent your eyes from getting red and swollen. In terms of health, sleep helps your skin repair itself in the same way it benefits your brain and muscles. The skin spends the most time repairing UV damage and replenishing collagen while you sleep.
2. Use Sun Protectants
If you only use one skincare product, it should be sunscreen. One of the most vital aspects of long-term health is protecting the skin from UV damage, the biggest source of which is sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure or frequent sunburns can cause premature aging and increase your risk for skin cancer. To combat these risks, you should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to any exposed skin.
Try to choose waterproof options with an SPF of at least 30, and be sure to reapply every two hours or so. There are also sun-protective clothing options available, so use these and sit in the shade when you can, as no sunscreen is 100 percent effective. If you want to save time, there are cosmetics available with SPF built-in, such as moisturizers and foundations.
3. Treat Dry Hands
During the Covid-19 pandemic, more frequent hand-washing has become one of the most important ways to combat the spread of the virus. However, washing your hands or using hand sanitizer more often can result in drier skin on your hands. Dry skin can be uncomfortable or painful and you may experience redness or cracking.
There are a few ways to counteract these issues, including hand creams and cuticle oils. You should either use a hand sanitizer formulated to retain moisture or apply moisturizer immediately after applying sanitizer. If you wash your hands with soap and water, pat them dry instead of rubbing them, and apply moisturizer while your hands are slightly damp.
4. Treat Your Lips
Don't forget to pay attention to your lips. They are relatively sensitive parts of your skin and require much of the same care you give the rest of your facial skin. You should apply sunscreen in the form of a lip balm and keep your lips moisturized, especially in winter when the risk of chapped lips is higher due to drier air.
There are many options out there to moisturize and protect your lips from dry air. These include everything from cost-effective options like petroleum jelly to scented products like mint lip balm. If you have sensitive skin, you likely also have sensitive lips, so be sure to use products with similar, simple ingredients that you know are unlikely to cause a reaction.
5. Know Your Skin Type
There are a few different types of skin, each of which requires a different type of skin care. Normal skin is skin that is considered to be clear of blemishes and not overly sensitive to most products. Sensitive skin may experience reactions to various products or ingredients, so if you have this skin type be sure to look for products formulated for sensitive skin.
Oily and dry skin also require specially formulated products. Dry skin needs extra moisture to combat itchiness or flakiness. Oily skin overproduces sebum and requires ingredients that combat this. Combination skin is dry in some places and oily in others. If you're unsure of your skin type, consulting a dermatologist can help you determine which products may produce the best results.
