Many people think that skin care is only a summer concern when the weather is warm and dry. But the truth is that you should take care of your skin all year round in all kinds of weather and in every climate. Skin is the largest organ we have, covering the entire exterior part of our bodies. It is as unique as each person, but no matter its type or age, skin deserves careful attention all year round. Here are a few ways to take care of your skin during the winter months.
Surprisingly, even on cold days you may need to apply sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. This might include your face and hands, for example. In the wintertime, when the sun is shining, it still emits potentially harmful rays that can make your skin look and feel dry. In higher altitudes, you can get sunburned sometimes. If you plan to be outdoors for more than a few minutes on a sunny or partly-sunny day, don’t forget the sunscreen on exposed skin.

Because the winter months can take a toll on skin, hair, fingers, and toes, it is often a good idea to schedule a spa visit. Specialists can apply targeted treatments to these areas to moisturize, soften, condition, and protect them. A medical spa may be able to treat certain skin conditions like acne and rosacea with over-the-counter products or natural emollients that can have you looking and feeling better immediately. In addition, you can relax in a quiet environment that enables you to de-stress from everyday tension and chronic busyness. Relaxation also helps to keep your skin clear and calm.
Keep Your Skin Clean
Oil glands can over-produce in the wintertime to keep your skin supple and warm. However, excess oil can also trigger skin breakouts and blemishes. Wash your face daily with warm water and a mild cleanser, rinsing thoroughly afterward. Dry your skin completely before going out in cold temperatures.
No matter your skin type, you will probably want to moisturize your face and hands during the cold months. Even if you have oily skin, a thorough but gentle cleansing as described above means that your skin will need to be protected by a light moisturizer. Dry skin may need a slightly heavier moisturizing cream. Failing to moisturize your skin can leave it dry and susceptible to cold air damage.
Take care of your skin in the winter as well as in the warm months. Most skin can be sensitive to certain conditions like frigid air or sharp wind. Follow steps like these to keep your skin well protected.
