Experts are always saying that we should eat superfoods for our best health. But those same superfoods can also result in better skin. Don’t forget that your skin is the largest organ your body has and when you’re healthy inside, it rewards you with glowing and refreshed skin on the outside.
So, which superfoods should you be eating to have better skin all-around?
- Ginger
Ginger is a known anti-inflammatory. Add freshly-grated ginger root to spice up food and give skin a soothed and calmed appearance.
- Chia Seeds
If you’re not keen on eating fish, you can get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids into your diet by eating chia seeds. Dump them into a smoothie and your skin will get the boost it needs for healthy skin cell function and greater production of collagen which will help you look younger naturally.
- Tomatoes
Lycopene-rich tomatoes not only help prevent heart disease, but this antioxidant also helps fight off the signs of aging, so add more of them to your plate. When tomatoes are cooked, the lycopene absorbs more readily into your body so ladle it up in soups and stews!
- Sweet Potatoes
With high levels of vitamin A, sweet potatoes can help reduce excess oil production in the skin. That means you can help clear up blemishes by eating more of them!
- Avocados
Full of healthy fats that your body needs, plus vitamin E, this base for guacamole is great for building healthy skin cell function. Plus, they can help keep skin hydrated. Pro tip: After cutting up avocados for your salad, sandwich, or guacamole, smooth the remainder of the flesh from the inside of the skin onto your hands and be amazed at the hydration it provides!
- Egg Whites
The protein your body gets from eggs in general is critical, but egg whites in particular have more lysine and proline, two amino acids your body needs. Plus, it also has collagen which keeps those fine lines from making their mark.
- Peanuts
And for vegans, you can get a dose of lysine by eating plenty of peanuts! Just go for unsalted so you don’t overdo your sodium intake.
- Quinoa
Quinoa is a protein all-star but it also has riboflavin which makes for fabulous skin. Riboflavin gives skin elasticity and helps boost production of connective tissue so you’ll keep an effervescent and youthful appearance.
- Leafy Greens
If you’re looking a bit blah lately, put more leafy greens on your plate. Kale, spinach, broccoli, and brussels sprouts are all brimming with vitamin K which helps stimulate circulation of the blood. When blood replenishes the skin cells, you have a more well-rested and evened-out tone.
- Citrus Fruits
And finally, those dark spots will be a thing of the past if you eat more citrus fruits. There’s a reason why those vitamin C topical creams are so popular now. They quell inflammation and brighten up your skin like nothing else!
Eating the right superfoods on the inside while nourishing skin from the outside is the best way to get better skin. Try this approach and see how much your skin improves!
