What You Need To Know About Dental Veneers

Dental veneers act as a protective shell that covers the front of the teeth. They are designed to mask any imperfections in the enamel, chips in the teeth, decay, stains, or misalignment.

What are the types of veneers?

Veneers can be made from either composite resin or porcelain. Porcelain veneers are more difficult to make because they require sending molds to a lab where the veneer is manufactured, while composite resin veneers are made right in the dental practice.  Composite resin veneers cost less and are easier to fix, but porcelain veneers are more resilient to staining, stronger, and more natural looking.

When do you need veneers?

Whether because of genetics or an accident, many people are dissatisfied with the appearance of their smile. Veneers allow these people to acquire the smile they want.

Before you choose veneers:

Veneers are a great way to make discolored, crooked, or chipped teeth look amazing, natural, and healthy, but veneers are not right for everyone. Because it is necessary to shave off part of the tooth enamel, not everyone should receive this treatment.

  • Pros Of Veneers
  1. Veneers are an easy way to whiten your smile.

Excessive cigarette smoking, or even years of drinking coffee, take a toll on the condition of your smile. Stained or discolored enamel can be professionally bleached, but if you are looking for a permanent solution, ask your cosmetic dentist in Amersham about having veneers fitted.

  1. Veneers correct cosmetic problems such as chipped or gapped teeth.

Veneers work by attaching to the enamel on the front surface of your teeth, so they cover imperfections like gaps or crooked teeth.

  1. Veneers replace or hide damaged enamel.

Usually worn down or decayed enamel is a result of aggressive brushing or overconsumption of highly acidic foods and drinks, and enamel cannot grow back on its own or repair itself. Luckily, dentists can synthetically replace enamel with veneers.

  • Cons Of Veneers
  1. Veneers can be expensive.
  2. Veneers may make the teeth more sensitive.

Some patients report experiencing increased sensitivity after having veneers placed in their mouths. Most patients who report sensitivity also report it going away after the first few days following the procedure.

  1. Veneers are irreversible.

The outer layer of your tooth must be removed to make room for the new layer or the veneer, so the tooth’s structure is permanently compromised.

How to prepare your teeth for veneers?

To fit veneers, a layer of enamel must be removed from the surface of the tooth. Dentists may use a local anaesthetic to ensure you experience no discomfort, but this isn’t always necessary. Once the enamel is shaved down, a mold is taken and sent to the manufacturer. The color of the veneer is then matched to the tooth using a shade guide.

How long does the treatment take?

Veneers are typically fitted in two appointments. The first appointment is to prepare the tooth and pick the shade for the veneer, and the second is to fit the veneer and bond it to the tooth using a special adhesive.

What happens after fitting the veneers?

After the veneer is fitted to the tooth, only minor adjustments can be made to it. Typically, your dentist will want to wait a week or so after it’s fitted to polish and check it for any adjustments that need to be made.

How long do the veneers last?

Veneers can break or chip, just like regular teeth, but they can also be fixed if chipped. Veneers are designed to last for years, but accidents happen. If broken, contact your dentist to repair them. The process will be much easier since the dentist should already have the design of the veneer on file.

How to aftercare for the veneers?

Care for your veneers in the same way you care for your natural teeth. Brush and floss at least twice a day and remember to visit your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning and a dental exam.

What are other alternatives to veneers?

To repair minor issues in the front teeth, natural tooth-colored fillings can be used instead of veneers. Crowns can also be used to strengthen teeth after having a large filling done, a root canal treatment, or for severe cracks.

How much do the veneers cost?

The cost varies depending on which type of veneer you get and where you go for treatment. It is important to discuss your options with your dentist to adequately understand the cost.
