Worried about getting a root canal? There might be alternatives for you after all!

You have options when it comes to safely handling a dying tooth. A root canal is designed to get rid of pain while preserving your infected tooth. With the living tissue inside, called pulp, infections that affect it need to be removed so you can keep your tooth.

Why Might You Need a Root Canal?

There are a few reasons that your dentist may tell you that you’ll have to get a root canal. Among them:

  • Gum disease
  • Cracked, damaged, or even chipped teeth that are caused by some kind of trauma such as an accident
  • When you need more than one treatment on the same tooth
  • Tooth decay that causes infection to the pulp inside

Alternatives to a Root Canal

You can discuss with your dentist the other options you have besides a root canal. One of them is having the tooth removed. Most dentists though will advise against this as much as possible so you can keep your teeth.

Plus, having that tooth pulled is so much more traumatic. Not only is it painful, particularly for recovery, but you have the potential for your other teeth to shift and move, causing new troubles.

Dentists recommend only doing an extraction when absolutely necessary. Instead, they offer these root canal alternatives:

  • Pulp capping – This is when they use a sealant to close the entrance to the pulp in your tooth. It doesn’t always solve the problem though and you may still wind up with a root canal.
  • Bridge denture –If you did decide to extract your tooth, you would need a dental bridge to replace it with.
  • Dental implant –This is a better choice than a bridge denture though it all depends on whether or not your nerves have been infected yet, or how severe that inflammation and infection is. It’s also much more expensive.

Pulp capping is a great alternative though root canal treatments aren’t painful. If you feel pain, it is because of the infection. By having a root canal or pulp capping, you can get rid of the pain.

When you feel pain in your mouth, it’s important to get to the dentist to have it checked out. Something that seems minor now can turn into a bigger problem down the road.

Infected teeth can cause the other teeth to become infected. You can also suffer from infections throughout the rest of your body which can be life-threatening. Let your dentist help you keep you in your best health, starting with your mouth!
