All foods and drinks leave a residue on the teeth, and any food particles that remain can gather germs around them. If left unattended this will cause plaque to build up on the teeth – which will become tartar if it is not removed with regular brushing.

To remove this buildup naturally, an abrasive yet gentle toothpaste can be used, oil pulling can loosen and remove buildup from around the teeth, and regular brushing and flossing can reduce the plaque buildup.

Baking Soda To Remove Plaque And Tartar Naturally

A toothpaste made with an ingredient such as baking soda can gently scrub the plaque buildup from around the teeth. This should be used to brush teeth twice a day, or after each meal, and should be abrasive enough to remove food particles and germs but not hard enough to damage the enamel or weaken the teeth.

Oil Pulling To Remove Plaque And Tartar Naturally

Oil pulling is a practice that has been around for hundreds of years and is used to remove buildup and germs from around teeth and gums. It can help to loosen plaque buildup to allow it to be easily removed by brushing the teeth afterwards.

A small amount of food grade oil is put into the mouth and swished around the mouth fully, pulled between the teeth and around the gums and cheeks. The oil will gather any loose food particles, loosen food particles that are stuck, and loosen plaque buildup from the teeth.

Larger particles and germs are removed from the mouth along with the oil when finished, but some smaller particles and the buildup on the teeth will require brushing for full removal.

Brushing And Flossing To Remove Plaque And Tartar Naturally

Brushing teeth at least twice a day along with flossing is necessary to remove the germs and plaque from the mouth. Moving the toothbrush along the gums and over the teeth loosens food and residue and helps to remove them from the mouth.

An all-natural toothpaste will assist in cleaning the teeth, leaving them with little to no plaque or tartar. Flossing between and around the teeth gets harder to remove residue and pulls all food bits from between the teeth and from between the teeth and gums.

To floss correctly the floss not only goes between the teeth but is curved around the tooth on either side, where the floss will grab bits of food and other particles and remove them from the tooth surface.

Deep Cleaning To Remove Plaque And Tartar Naturally

Plaque buildup becomes tartar over time and becomes harder to remove. In some instances a deep clean is required at the dental office to remove the buildup to avoid cavity formation and growth.

A deep clean involves metal tools or high-pressure water to remove all food particles, residue, plaque, and tartar from the teeth and gums. Any small pockets that have formed in the gums around the teeth are cleaned out and the mouth is offered a fresh start.

To help to reduce plaque and tartar at home teeth should be brushed and flossed twice daily. A mouthwash or rinse can be used for small bits that are missed by the toothbrush, and oil pulling can assist in loosening plaque from the teeth.
