Are Your Teeth Weak? Here’s What You Can Do to Strengthen Them

There’s nothing more beautiful than strong, healthy teeth. The enamel is what keeps them protected so they not only look nice but also have the strength to chew for you for years to come.

While tooth enamel is hard, it’s not completely invincible. It can’t be regenerated by your body either like with a bone. Enamel doesn’t have any living cells, so once it is chipped or cracked, the damage is done for good.

That’s why keeping your teeth strong is so important. Sometimes enamel erodes from what you eat or drink. Other times, it’s from abrasion and aging over time. Another common problem that leads to enamel erosion is plaque build-up. Take care of your oral health to keep that enamel strong and your smile looking spectacular.

Stopping Loss Of Enamel

In most cases, it’s not too late to save your teeth from further enamel loss. You can strengthen your weak teeth by working with your dentist and changing some of your habits for a healthier mouth.

Brush and floss regularly

The first thing you should make sure you’re doing right is brushing and flossing every day. A minimum of brushing twice and flossing once each day is crucial for strengthening teeth. Don’t brush too hard and be sure you’re using that 45-degree angle to target the gum line. A great investment to make this all easy is an electric toothbrush which gets teeth cleaner, whiter, and healthier than a manual one. Brush your tongue too…bacteria lingers on it!

Avoid certain foods and beverages

The foods you eat aren’t just important for healthy organs and maintaining a proper weight. They help your teeth too. Foods and beverages that are highly acidic should be avoided. Sodas, lemons, and citrus can do untold damage so rinse your mouth out with water immediately after eating them. For drinks, you can use a straw so that it won’t come into contact with your teeth.

It’s not just acidic foods though. Fermentable carbs are incredibly problematic. Basically, that’s anything high in processed sugars and starches. An occasional treat is nothing to worry about, especially if you rinse your mouth afterward, but if your diet always has cookies, candy, breads, and cereals in it, you’ll be weakening your teeth. Even bananas can cause demineralization so be careful!

Eat these things instead

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), a balanced diet will help your teeth and gums stay healthy. The next time you’re at the supermarket, get more lean proteins, fresh produce, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Things like cheese are a delicious way to halt demineralization because it increases saliva flow. That saliva flow keeps pH levels balanced for a healthy mouth.

You can also chew sugar-free gum - use the one with xylitol - and drink more water each day. By using these simple tactics to change your habits, and working with your dentist, you’ll have the kind of teeth everyone envies.
