Occasionally having trouble sleeping is a normal occurrence in life and can happen for a wide variety of reasons. You may have had too much caffeine, you may have watched something that engaged your brain, or you may have not done enough during the day to make yourself tired. However, if you find yourself having trouble sleeping frequently, this could be a sign that you need to see a sleep professional.

There are a wide variety of things that can cause your trouble sleeping, and finding out the root cause is imperative. Constant lack of sleep can make you forgetful and can have severe health impacts. Below are six signs you should look for that will indicate that you need to see a sleep professional.

1. Pain In Your Jaw Or Face

If you experience a lot of pain in your jaw or face upon waking or even while you are trying to go to sleep, you will want to see a professional about the issue. This could indicate that you are grinding your teeth while you are asleep, or you may have a condition known as TMJ.

This condition can cause jaw pain which can have effects not only on your sleep but your overall health. If you experience any kind of jaw pain, you will want to make an appointment with a TMJ dentist Worcester MA.

2. You Are Tired During The Day

If you find that you are constantly tired during the day and struggle to keep your eyes open, this is a sign that you are not sleeping well at night. If you find yourself doing your normal activities every day but you are struggling to do so, you will want to take a close look at your bedroom habits.

Make sure that your mattress is comfortable and that your bedroom is cool and dark. If not, make sure that they are and see if this helps your sleep. If not, it is time to see a sleep professional.

3. You Snore

Everyone snores at some point in their lives. It is totally normal, but sometimes, when you snore, it can be a sign of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing while you are asleep. In some cases, sleep apnea can lead to death.

If you feel tired all the time and find that you are snoring, you will want to see your sleep doctor to ensure that you do not have sleep apnea. If you do have sleep apnea, your doctor will prescribe a CPAP machine that will help you to breathe and get a good night’s sleep.

4. You Are Having Weight Fluctuations

If you find that you are suffering from weight fluctuations, this could be because you are not sleeping well. When you are not sleeping well, this has an effect on your metabolism. A slower metabolism will cause you to gain weight and have a harder time keeping it off. If you notice that your weight is going up, even with diet and exercise, your sleep patterns may be to blame. Contact your sleep doctor for an evaluation.

5. Memory and Focus

Memory and focus can be affected by poor sleep. If you are tired during the day, you may feel like you cannot focus on your work or the tasks that you are doing. Your memory may also feel muddled, and you may not be able to recall things that you have done previously.

The longer that your issues with sleep go on, the more loss of focus and memory problems you can have. If you find yourself with focus or memory problems, it is a good idea to visit your sleep doctor to ensure that a bad sleeping pattern is not to blame.

6. You Have Medical Issues That Are Impacting Your Sleep

If you have medical issues, they may affect your sleep, as will medications that you take to help manage any medical issues you may have. Insomnia is a common side effect of many pharmaceutical medications.

If you deal with conditions like restless leg syndrome, depression, or chronic pain, you may also find yourself dealing with a lack of sleep. If this is the case, you will want to consult a sleep doctor to find out what you can do to get a better night’s sleep.

Going to a sleep doctor can help to ensure that you get your proper sleep. Not getting enough sleep or the right kind of sleep can negatively impact your health.
